wolf fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He's 14in. Right now I'm not feeding him anything. There's a gold fish in there that the previous owner put in a bag. I know I'll have to ween him off of the live food but since he's hooked on it I was gonna wait till he ate the gold fish and start feeding him smelt or beef heart. He hasn't ate since I put him in his new home two days ago though :( Probably just stressed out.

14in....hes a nice size, and I wouldnt worry he'll come around and eat once he settles in and gets comfortable. I am totally for LIVE feedings as long as the feeders are HEALTHY and not coldwater fish like goldfish, rosy reds, or etc. But I mean wolves are Predators and Piscavorous so hey dont deprive them...LOL...the key is a varied diet so prepared foods and live, and I have never bn with the beefheart thing cuz I jus dont know how a wolf would ever come across any beef in the wild, but I have heard its ok for a treat every now and then. He looks real good and im sure he'll settle in nicely.

normally wolves dont like too much current but they mostly ignore it.
they will eat most meaty food, some will take pellets.
gravel is fine.
any substrate is fine.
its up to you.

Convict feeders and other warm water fish. Goldfish and rosy reds are ok every now and then but feeding them to them regularly isnt the best for your fish. They are to fatty. Im not sayin you cant give em goldfish sometimes, just make sure you vary the diet and that will make him happy.

Well, I bought him two crayfish today and he loved them. I'll probably get some more on Monday.

why not just get him off live.
he will be more active knowing he cant just sit there and wait for food to pass by any time...
seriously.
dead would be much better.

Yea, I agree. I like th idea of being able to hand feed the fish from the top. I've got frozen fish in the freezer but he doesn't seem to take for them. I wouldn't mind feeding him a mouse or two...haha. Would this pose any problems to the fish or tank? I'd imagine it might get a bit messy.

The live vs. dead argument could go on for days...LOL. Both have pros and cons. I wont fully go into this as their are "Stickied" threads that tell advantages and disadvantages of both. The main downfall of live is the risk of disease or infection. A disadavntage of frozen is the fish does not have to chase his food and work for it. Especially if you are feeding him tropical fish which are much faster than goldfish and such. So really the best thing is to vary the diet. You could have him on frozen and a couple times a month give him live food, so that he has to work for it. Plus its good for them to still have to resort to hunting...keeps em sharp. But how big were the crayfish, I have never seen one eat one. Did he crunch him up and rip him apart...LOL....

And about the mice. Well some are against this especially if the rodent is alive. In the wild they do eat small mammals, but some aruge it is completely unecessary in aquaria. Its really preference. Wolves are naturally piscavorous so fish make up most of their diet. Remember that whether the fish is live or frozen. A mouse every now and then is ok as long as its not sick or diseased and only given as a treat every once in a while. Whether u decide to feed live or dead is up to u. Well you should def get some vids of him eating whatever you do feed him and I hope this helps.

Yea, I may switch to frozen foods for the majority of the time and feed live foods on a couple occasions throughout the month. The information provided is definitly helpful. the crayfish were definitly pretty large. I'm planning on getting some next week so i'll shoot a video of the meal and post it up.
