Wolves for 75 gal stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Also, your Rhampochromis look really nice. Honestly reminds me of barracudas, so I’ll look at them too.
Thanks! Their common name is Malawi barracuda. They behave more like a predatory characin than a hap from my experience, I had one in the tank with the wolf fish and it even shoaled with all the characins

I missed where you said you’re working on a big plywood tank. I say get the gold if that big tank is a definite. Golds are very active and interactive. The red wolf, dragon puffer and most other wolf fish are like having a pet rock. I heard black wolf fish are active, but probably also illegal in CA. I had a gold wolf with , hujeta, odoe pike, chalceus and red tailed barracuda. They were all 6-8” and I only had that combo for a few months, but it seemed to work. One of my favorites oddballs isn’t considered an oddball by most but it’s rhampochromis haps. They look just like barracuda including the big teeth. I had a pair of rhampochromis with some bichirs and that was a really cool tank
Here’s a vid of the gold wolf with the others

I am working on a large plywood aquarium and black wolves are probably near the top of the list.
Here’s another rhamp I had shoaling with the characins

Those Rhamps are nice. They really do look like mini cudas. Now I’m pretty split on what to get. Coming back to the hobby really makes me realize how indecisive I am.

I know the feeling, before the move, I had 10 tanks from 55-180g. I decided to limit myself to two 75s after the move. So I have one Malawi rift tank and one with hujeta, geos, an HRP and a half banded pike. But it was super hard to decide and I keep getting new ideas every day 😂
There’s a few species of rhamp, I think they range from 7”-14”.

I’ll just say my red wolf is always active as long as I’m near the tank. They learn to recognize you pretty quick and will beg for food. In a 75 you could probably get away with some sort of bottom dwelling tankmate like a pleco or raphael cat, but no guarantees with wolves.
If you are looking for a solo wet pet, this is definitely the way I’d go.

For more communal fish J Joshuakahan has made some good suggestions.

I think I’m like 90% set on getting a red wolf. Not my image but just seeing their potential is insane. I’ve been reading up a lot of care guides and watching videos of them. Truly beautiful. 758402D7-DF0F-4C4C-8642-9650953FB7B9.jpeg

Nice, just be sure to seal every square inch of the top, they’ll jump through the tiniest opening, trust me. Also, people like to keep the water level lower to help with that, but I discovered that makes it worse. There’s a YouTube video demonstrating that splashing water causes them to jump. Mine used to jump and bang his face up all the time, so after seeing that I raised the water level so there was practically no splashing and that really helped
