wood screw vs deck screw

You're welcome. Don't forget to post pics. Good luck and have fun building it.

A good screw to use is a square or star drive screw that is self tapping. Essentially it has a cutting groove worked into the end of the screw allowing u to screw in at near any angle (pocket screw) without the fear of splitting the wood any or needing to predrill. They are extremely strong and very easy to use.
I just built a 2x4 and 2x6 fish tank stand frame for my 6fish foot 125 gallon. Very quick and easy to do.

For screws used outdoors in the weather or around damp areas or with pressure treated lumber, you need zinc screws, coated deck screws, or stainless steel screws. Standard galvanized wood screws will rust and or react to the new pressure treated lumber. For douglas fur indoors wood screws will be ok however deck screws will probably be the best option for an aquarium stand.

I wouldn't worry about using deck screws on an aquarium stand. MAYBE the hood, but even then, I don't think its necessary.

I built a deck on my house a few years ago with Phillips deck screws, I recently re-did a portion of the deck to put in a hot tub, and to my dismay, most of the screws I took out had started to rust on the threads. It looked like the coating came off while the screw was being screwed in (I pre-drilled every hole, too). These were the nice name brand screws with an thick, tough looking coat, and I was using treated pine. Not some fancy hardwood or composite or anything.

I replaced them with stainless steel deck screws. But usually I just use drywal screws + wood glue for aquarium related stuff.
