They do right now however the one we had last year had the same thing and by about 6 or 8 inches it was gone from what I have read this is common in very small gar fry. If they are not true Gar you will not anger or disappoint me as we love having them just the same. I am however pretty sure they are true gar likely long nose, I am not sure of the scientific name and these did come from the same area but a different body of water than the one we had last year. Here is a link to a choppy video of our 75 and the gar we had last year that I released to a private pond about a month ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tprBwGVIiRA

I actually have more of the babies than we would like to keep if anyone is in the knox Tn area and would like a couple or a few of these healthy little guys for their system as they cannot be released back into the wild and would have to go to a tank or a private lake or pond.

I was thinking the exact thing. Didn't want to piss of the OP if it wasn't. But now there's another who agrees. Anyone else?
I am not an expert, but I think the tailfins are not forked just frayed (nibbled on?). They do look like true Gars to me.

Question to OP: It isn't clear from the pictures. Are they really 1 inch? (Because that would be really really small.)

They were about an inch a few weeks ago when I brought them home they now are about 2 to 2.5 inches depending on the gar so yes very very small .... when I first got them home they were so small they could not eat large mosquito larvae they only could take small ones and had a total mouth length of just 1/4 inch. The tails have been nibbled on on some of the gar however yes they are split this is normal in very small gar fry I forget what it is called but they have what looks like a small streamer that is off the top and they wiggle it using it almost like a propeller to move it stops growing and goes away as they get larger. If you look at the video I posted that gar looked just like the little ones I have now when we first got him and the split went away at about 5 inches if I remember correctly. I remember it happening because at first I thought something was wrong or was attacking him when it started to whither away and later found this is normal

Moving most of our guys from their 10 gal grow tank to the 75 tonight two will be staying in the grow tank a little longer for some "special attention". Brought home about 50 minnows for the 75 so they can eat good as soon as they want to. The big ones are up to 3+ inches already from the 1 to 1.5 they started at.

Well after drip acclimating entire 10 gal grow tank to the temp and conditions of its neighboring 75 gal I moved 5 of the babies and left 2 in the grow tank to fatten up on mosquito larvae and small minnows. I guess I had so so results, out of 16-18 1 inch ish gar fry 7 have made it. 5 extra healthy 1 fairly good shape 1 so so. Better than what would have prolly made it in the wild. I will try to get picks of the 5 in the 75 gal tomorrow I should be able to get much better picks of them there as it is a better system.

look like gar to me, i would also keep them in the 10gal till they're around 8inch before moving to a 75 gal

My concern with keeping them in the ten gallon till about 8 inches is overcrowding with 7 of them in there and for the two I have left in there that aren't getting the food they need because the other 5 are more aggressive. 1 gar in particular is much more aggressive, so much so that he is about half an inch longer than the rest of them. Of course I will be watching them closely and if there are issues over in the 75 gal they will be promptly moved back to one of the 10 gal quarantine tanks or to the 35 tall we also have that is empty. Although I am avoiding that because of the depth of the tank with the 35. Also in the 75 the largest fish is a 3 or 4 inch bluegill and the pike will have length on him very soon.

Sounds like the OP caught these wild in Tennessee waters. They're probably true gar. I believe him. I'll take his word for it. Are Pike Charicins/False Gar native to Tennessee? I don't think they are. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

will comment more later, but these are definitely true gars. being from TN there's no way he'd be catching wild pike characins, people; use the info you're provided with :). --
