any advice for working at petco? NEVER worked before in my life ( well besides at home ) so i need some advise, what should i do/what should i wear/how should i approch custamers/anything else to add? again i wont be getting paid. so should i also ask what size tank the fish will be going in when i get fish for custemers?? and should i recomand them to this site? and any other info you can think of to help a first time worker out? ill be getting an actual paying job within 3 weeks or less!!! excited!:headbang2

I recommend customers to this site fairly often if the seem genuinely interested in the hobby. As far as what to wear, go with the company dress code or if you don't know it, just something that looks pretty nice (polo, khakis, etc.)

A good lfs employee always asks about the customers tank in order to give better advice on what to stock it with, what would get along, etc. Just be courteous and nice and give the best advice you can and i'm sure you'll be fine. Good luck :headbang2

Khaki pants and a shirt with a collar; either a polo or button down will work.

At petco- always show an interest in the customers pets and tanks. No matter how dumb you think their tanks are. Compliment them on what they have.

ALWAYS be polite. No matter how big of a jerk someone might be to you, be polite. No exceptions. Your job will depend on that.

ok so I can't pass this up

- Dress for success. Be a dork. Slacks and a nice shirt, even when you don't have to. You'll end up promoted.

- Hold your tounge. You will find many ways to do things 'better'. Suggest them to management/owner, then let it go when nothing changes.

- Eat the OT. Sounds like it's pretty early for this one but when OT presents itsself, Be first in line to request OT.

- Don't make excuses. You'll make mistakes, and you'll be blamed for others mistakes. Rather than argue about it, I like this phrase when presented with critisism: "Ok Thank You"

- Customers are easy. Here's the rule: "They are rite." If they ask a question, answer it. Don't volunteer unwanted information, it's a real turn-off.

thanks all, but my rides are screwed up and i cant go today to goodwill which irritates the heck out of me!! so next week ill be going to goodwill, but still going friday to petco.

Do as your told pretty much. Its your first day and i think you mentioned it was part of a program. You probably won't be bagging fish or helping customers set up tanks you will most likely be stocking. Learn the store because customers are going to ask you where to find things.
