Yes, smaller. A male CAO averages between 130 and 180lbs a Rafeiro do Alentejo averages about 110 lbs. The height is simalar but the mass is not.
I own Rafeiros do alentejo who have a lot, albeit a tad smaller, than spanish mastiffs.
As a matter of fact, during the communist revolution here in 74, they were nearly destroyed as a fascist, land owner symbol.
They were brought back by a couple if very dedicated guys, who went all over the alentejo and got what they could save, then they had to mix (1) spanish mastiff blood and (2) cao de gado transmontano.
The latter was preserved because it is from the hills in the far north, very far away, where the commies had no chance pursuing them ...
You can find a male rafeiro of the size if an ovtcharka Ben, but you will be very hard pressed.

Around albufeira(and Lagos too I guess) yes, I suppose, but in the east, east of faro, it is very preserved. Almost no tourists there, and most are from the north (Porto). The food and nature there, godlike. Love the three big islands there.. Isla de armona + two smaller ones I cant remember right now
