Worm question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ok I finally got a picture!!! I went to clean the tank today and i seen the lil worm on my thermometer. I took it out the tank. I tried to get good pics. It moves almost like an earthworm, and segmented. Anyone have any guesses? Is it an earthworm?

O wow. A leech you say….do they hitch hike on plants? I’m only asking because I have not introduced any fish… all I have are 2 rabbit snails, and some amano shrimp. I will be getting two rope fish in October and don’t want them to be killed by a leach….

Could’ve hitchhiked on something. Haven’t seen many but I’d remove it. Keep an eye out for any that pop up.

Ok I noticed another one. I tried so hard to catch it… they swim incredibly fast!!! And in an “s” shape when swimming in water. I have read that some leeches do not feed on blood, but many eat snails, shrimp, and some eat stuff from the bottom of tanks. I have no idea if mine are harmless or harmful. But I will say I did have 10 amano shrimp, I’ve only seen 3-4 recently.
I am putting my shoes on and headed to lfs’s to see if I can find a worm trap. I’ve read that most of the planeria traps actually show pics of leeches inside… Ima try frozen beef hearts as bait.
I will not use meds in my tank and it appears leech eggs are impossible to kill. Anyone know of any fish that eat leeches (besides pond fish)?

Ok Update: went to 3 stores… petco, Petsmart, and pet supermarket… no one carriers worm catchers. I did find one online at walmart but shipping time was like month (maybe it comes from china?). I found the same one on Amazon, it will be here Saturday! I will be loading it up with frozen brine shrimp as bait (I realized I’m out of frozen beef heart, and could have picked some up today while I was out, but of course that would have made life easier ?). I will post pics and let y’all know if it works. I am trying so hard not to be discouraged, especially since I don’t even have fish yet.

Keep removing them. Hope it’ll stop but if there are eggs and hatching then there’s gonna be a prob. Hard to kill from what I remember.
