worms in vent

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have some good news. My gourami is showing very good signs of expelling dead worms. They are in the form of ropes of poo. The dead worms act as fibers that are twisted together. And there are ropes of poo on the bottom of the tank in high amounts. Normally I would say "oh gross" and grab a bucket and syphon, but the meds need to stay in the tank for another day. Both fish are still very bloated and I am hoping they will completely clear without a second treatment.

Now I have bad news...I just found out another fish has nematodes. This time it is in one of my main tanks. That means the whole system is infected. I have snails in there and they serve as an intermediary host to the larva. It looks like I am going to have to nuke the whole system. The bottle of medication will treat four hundred gallons so I will be fine.

Here are some pics of my gourami. Its vent is just under and behind the gills. The red spot is the worms hanging out.

And here is a pic of my latest victem, my jewel cichlid. He has a long white worm hanging out too.

Hey bud, are you using the medicated food or levamisole hydrochloride? Sorry to hear the rest got sickly too, hopefully they have as quick of a turn around.

Good question...I meant to post about the medicated food. If you hide medicine in a cat or dog's food, the food will get eaten and the pill will get spit out. You can't pull this trick with children either. But the medication suppliers know we are dumb enough to buy anything. I starved my fish for two days until they started eating the food. Then I noticed that they will mouth every piece of food I put in the tank and then spit out every piece of food in hopes of finding one morsel that is not medicated.

I bought the levamisole hydrochloride and it works great. One side effect that I learned is that it is a fish vomitting agent. Minutes after treating my tanks, a fish vomitted and then soon all of them were vomitting everything they had eaten in the last two days. What didn't come out one end, came out the other.
