Worried. GSP abnormal behavior

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With your argument, water changes shouldn't be done at all then.

I'm guessing high nitrates to be the problem, 80 after a water change means it was even higher before, up the water changes or the %. I too am surprised the plants are living at that salinity, pics of tank and the 7" GSP?

With your argument, water changes shouldn't be done at all then.

Not much of an argument, just stating that there are too many variables in this situation that could be the cause of it but no numbers before the wc are provided to prove any theory given.

Surprised you out of all that have replied didn't catch it nor ask for more specific parameters. I've noticed from the more experienced hobbyist, more information is requested to compare against their own experiences.

but to entertain your point of view of me, yes, I would not do water changes at this point if there is a problem being caused by the water change since it would do more damage than good. Nitrates increase but normally at a rate in which the fish could acclimate to so it would not cause problems overnight.

IDK of any time water changes won't help a situation, unless you have toxic tap water.

That is the point trying to be made by my post.

There was no information as to what water source used nor if tap water was even used. Only stated that a water change was done. Tap water is inconsistent at times and the amount of chloramines added does present itself as toxic when it comes to fish. Also the use of sea salt to increase the sg. would also increase the pH which would turn ammonia into a very lethal thing when added to the aquarium.

Not sure of the OP's location as far as city water is concerned but down in Houston,Texas the city has dumped a lot of chloramines into the city water and it's starting to present itself by killing fish. In this situation a water change would not be solving anything and adding to the problem. If the situation is with ammonia/chloramines/etc and the water source is abundant I would think that is adding to the problem and not helping much of any.

At this point, based on information given by the OP the only thing that has changed is the water change, whether or not there is critical information being left out or not, that is all there is to work with.

Alright, I guess I was wrong to assume he was treating the water for any toxic chemicals present. Double dosing with Prime will help.

Sorry to everyone trying to help. I know I wasn't clear on how I keep my GSP's. I got so worried about the little guy I put him in my FW community tank. That tank is only 10g, with Shrimps, more plants, guppies, rasboras, Snails, I can't remember the name but a striped cat fish and 2 betas(1male/1female. WELL when I woke up to check on him. That tank has been devastated ! He killed about 10 Cherry red , 5 yellow, 2 crystal red shrimps, unknown amount of snails, I can't find any of my 5 fancy tail guppies, and 1 galaxy rasbora. I knew it would happen. Just did not think it would happen over night. Oh well. AS long as the little guy is better. As for my GSP tank. I had the water treated today. Everything was within spec. Amonia 0ppm, Nirate 20ppm, Nirite 0ppm, H.p/h 7.8. My current SG is 1.002. I did not test it myself. I went to my LFS and had them test it. As for my water changes I perform them every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. I do about a 25% change of water with light cleaning of the gravel. I use normal tap water with water conditioner( Tera Aqua Safe Plus). I don't have an RO/RODI or anything like that. Do you think my subrate is in other words "sucks" ? As for driftwood I have none. I didn't want the wood to tint the clarity of the water. IMG_0137.JPGIMG_0140.JPG
This was done after I re-introduced him back into his orignal tank. Also I picked up 2 more GSP's from my LFS. He isn't a Puffer fanatic. But he knows more than I do. He told me to add enough to make 4 puffers. So I did. But correct me if i am wrong. Don't they need 30gal each ? and X2 times filtration ? He seems ok for now. The puffer in questions is the mid sized one. My oldest puffer is the largest one.

You are correct about the 30g's per gsp. It sounds like your lfs is just trying to make a quick buck off of you, can you return the new ones? Are they all in the 10g right now? How many were in the 10g when you got the water tested?

also good job on doing regular water changes!
