Worst Fears Come True.....

Sorry for your loss Pnut...... i too have been fighting with my Lents, just cured them of ich. Still alive and strong, but had me worried. My Johanna though is confusing the hell out of me. Still will not eat pellets, but eats algae wafers I feed my Gibbyiceps. Gibby might even be starving because of it. One thought since this is occurring, maybe need more veggies in a pike diet.

as P would say Andre "pretty sure Jeff didnt have the FIRE".

Like I was telling someone today P, 3rds time a charm right...

Lets hope so. They are hella sensative. Oy!

The sp. atabapo breathed very rapidly and heavily and then kicked the bucket.

Thats exactly what happened with my sp. 'atabapo fires'....both times. This last time one of them had a full belly as well...so maybe it has something to do with digestion. I don't know. Massive water changes, increased aeriation, and lots of TLC did nothing. Very very frustrating, like it has been said already, very hard to treat something when you don't know whats causing it.

uv is not realy good.sorry for your lost:(

UV steralizers are extremely good for fish if you have them running the right amount of water through. If you run at to many gph they only kill the algae, if you run them at the recommend speeds of gph as stated on the box they come in they can kill many floating parasites and virtually eliminate things like ich and other waterborn parasites that might kill your fish.

Hadrian I thought you had a sp atabapo like I did which came from Rapps, am I right? If so thats not the same as the ones that Peanut lost. Although still tempermental compared to my Johanna our atabapos don't appear to be as sensitive to water quality as the sp atabapo fire's are. HITH still plagues mine because I don't have the time for massive water changes or the money for the water to change the 240 gallon often but hopefully with the meds Peanut told me about I can cure the HITH soon.

Sorry for your loss Peanut, good luck finding some new ones, maybe next time the guy won't list them on aquabid or if he does you'll get yours and he'll have a few extras for me to buy :) ~ Trent

AF-you're absolutelyright mine is a Rapps. I have to say I'm not too happy with it either as it thus far is nowhere near "blood red". I saw a female in a lfs and she was about 1.5 inches smaller than mne and had a very red head-so who knows. If mine doesn't get some color soon I may trade him in for a different species of pike. So you can help me with the separation-guilt of betrayong my finned friend!

Get the 'true' sp. 'atabapo fires'....like what I had...harder to find, but they WILL get red. Plus, your pike wasn't full grown, needs to be 10 to 12" before it will show complete adult coloration....;). SO there is still hope...arrg!!

since these seem to be food related mortalities I wonder if there is some sort of bacterial infection involved. particulary given the speed of kick-off.

woke up to my male TR dead. didnt see any signs of breathing bad or anything.

I did find an old TFH mag that talked about diseases. Cryptobia, an internal parasite, that if the fish started to breath heavily then that was about it for it. Triggers are poor water quality, stress and handling. No real treatment is known but Metronidazole and other antibiotics are helpful in controlling outbreaks.

Im off to find another male...
