im so sorry to hear this! i get upset when i lose a fish too-and to lose so many i know i would be just as devastated. I doubt it was a temp difference since you stated it was nothing out of the norm-possibly the city water added a chemical to their supply? or tinkered with the water supply on their end?
if the tank is cycled it should have no ammonia-even a trace amount is critical to juvenile growing fish-i know fish are extremely sensitive to ammonia-and killed of a whole batch of 17 after a bad waterchange myself! it sounds like the same thing happened to you..
do you possibly change all the media in your filters at the same time? could have killed off your BB-triggering a mini cycle..
