Worthless Food to Buy for Your Fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Of course, a food that your fish don't eat is a "worthless" food. But there are foods that your fish will eat that are "worthless" as well, from a nutritional standpoint.

For any food that I consider, I look at the first few ingredients. What are they?

Check out the first 5 ingredients in these:

Good food:

Omega One Cichlid Pellets - whole salmon, whole herring, whole shrimp, wheat flour, wheat glutten...

Omega One Super Veggie Kelp Pellets
- whole kelp, spirulina, whole salmon, halibut, seafood mix (including krill, whole herring, & shrimp)....

NLS Thera+ - krill, herring, wheat flour, algae meal, garlic....

OK food:

Hikari Cichlid Gold - fish meal, flaked corn, wheat flour, gluten meal, brewer's dried yeast...

Hikari Bio-Gold+ - fish meal, wheat flour, brewer's dried yeast, gluten meal, spirulina...

Crap:

Tetra Cichlid Sticks - Fish meal, torula dried yeast, wheat germ meal, dried potato products, wheat gluten... what fish eats potatoes????

You have to look at the ingredients, if the first thing listed is wheat or corn products, do your fish a favour and toss it in the trash....

These are the pelleted foods that I feed to my cichlids, I don't ever go near the Nutrafin, Tetra, etc. as it is generally overpriced garbage.

If someone has a container of other foods it would be great to post the first 5 ingredients so everyone can compare what they are giving their fish....

What is the worst food you've ever fed your fish? I think it would be nice to get a thread going (maybe sticky) that tell people what food is worthless to buy and avoid. I couldn't really find a thread like it, so I started this one.

For me, it has to be Top Fin Shrimp Pellets. None of my fish will eat them, except for one of the cichlids did, but it didn't seem to really like it. Most of them will, however, eat Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets. I would probably assume that all Top Fin food is probably not good.

I have Top Fin Tropical Flakes and all my fish seem to like them just fine.. I also have Omega One Freeze Dried Blood Worms (Nutri-Treat) and they all seem to really love these.. only problem I've noticed with the blood worms is since my fish are still piratically baby's(less than 3 months) is that i have to break/cut the worms apart so that they can eat them. My golden Dojo will swim up to the surface to eat both flakes and worms but my other Dojo hasn't quite got to this point or has no desire.. so I usually feed flakes in the morning Then mix it up. My fish get feed 3 or 4 times as they "act" hungry

Well I bought some Beaf Heart for my fish and their not taking interest in it...

floating bloody pellets. there extremley hard. they suck. lol i dont buy i make. i got millions of breeding guppies in my pond with breeding yabbies

Does it only apply to rays or to all/most freshwater fishes? I had to ask because my fish seem to love blue anchovies. They are bought from a Filipino market and is of course, for human consumption. I have dats, peacock bass, clown knife, red belly pacu, and the like. They have had the anchovies for close to 3 months.

I find the posts against tetra sticks interesting. I am sure you pbass lovers have heard of Ric Perez? He is the guy up in Chicago who was the first person to successfully spawn pbass in captivity. When I last saw his fish room he was raising F3 pbass. His food of choice....Tetra sticks and trout chow
