I am planning on building an acrylic tank (after my dad seeing the monster tank at the LFS, and after reading milkman's DIY) and I found a way to build one for roughly 650 dollars using only 2 sheets of 8x4 acrylic (plus the 4 foot long support braces at the top). Making 3 cuts I can have the base, and all 4 sides.

I just don't know if 6 feet is long enough for the rays. I read that its better for it to be circular to keep them in motion, and I figured that since I can't make it 6 feet by 6 feet that it would be better than to have it 8 feet by 2 feet (240 standard).

So in short, is the 6 feet too short? Or is this a good size for a ray?

i'll let jd7 chime in as the expert (he's already checking this out :D), but I think it would be sufficient for them

Of course it would work. I hope you are able to keep your retics alive. Its pretty rare to see adult retic!

Personally Id go with motoros as they are hardier and you could have a pair in there for a long time.

Onion, Im FAR from an expert....I just spend too much time reading I guess. Sadly I only have around 18months under my belt of keeping rays at home...That is soon going to change! :D

I think 6x4 would be a good footprint for retics too.. :D

Just make sure you purchase quality retics and baby them alot when they are young, they should do fine.. I haven't had any issues with mine, but I did power-feed blackworms for the first 3 months, and they went through 2 QT periods.. as soon as I got them on Krill, it got easy..

for the record, how many rays do you have now Miles?

lol, I mean in total, not just rectics

That's all :D

Being patient, waiting for the right rays.. was going to pick up 2 last week, but the seller pulled out.

Most the rays I have pix of are imports that were sold long ago.. wish I would of kept some now.

Recently lost power in the fish room, and had to stuff the rays in a tiny tank.. atleast I can do some tests to prove it can be done :D but waiting to re-wire the fish room and install pools for the breeding project down the road.

oh okay...n00b ;)
