Would a 6x4x2 tank work for retics?

You should get a pair of aquaruim gloves. They have elastic cuffs and go almost up to your shoulders.

But I have palmar hyper hydrosis so if they are contained in the rubber gloves, it creates a similar problem.

I was going to say prazipro miles but I kept thinking of another medicine with a z in it. Is prazipro the easiest to find? And are the nematoads just something the rays deal with in the wild?

And I don't want to do motoros for a number of reasons. Some of them being size, aggression, and rarity. While I know the retics are more common than the motoros, it seems like they are all wild caught. If they are so common why not just breed them? I don't understand why they are always ripped out of the wild. It seems everyone and their mother is breeding motoros, I want to keep these retics because they intrigue me with their small disc size and long ribbon like tail. And it seems not many people keep them past 8 inches or so or breed them for that matter. At least from all the material I have read.

Northwest? No I am from the St Louis area. But my LFS said the price they would charge for them is about 60 dollars. I don't mind because the shipping is what kills the price. Even if they make an order of 175 dollars worth of fish I am sure the shipping costs so much to get to the middle of the US, probably at least $80. The other LFS charges 140 for retics, so to me, 60 is a deal, I really can't get them any cheaper.

I remember the quote for shipping from jeff rapps was somewhere around 90 dollars.

The LFS is called Malawi Aquatics. they pretty much only carry cichlids, oddballs, and a few monsters. My favorite LFS.

How did you treat your rays? I remember reading you had to treat them, did you use a garlic method or a medicine?

the lfs where i got mine upped the price to 60$, i got it for lil less...They sell at another LFS for 34.99$ Always look awesome!

My female retic is 18" long with tail, and has about a 10" disk.

Im going to try and hybridize her with my "yepezi" AKA peru ray.

Also 6x4x2 is sufficient?? how bout with some Dats and Geophagus and such... Im looking into either makin a big ass tank, or buying a big ass acrylic. I need to consolidate all my tanks to something around 300-480G. I want an 8x4x2.

I would like to consolidate my tanks as well. I would really only want to keep my 75, 125, and the acrylic one I want to make. I need to get another job though before I go buying all this aquarium stuff. Car insurance is coming up, and after quitting poopsmart (being forced into quitting after bringing in my doctor's note) it isn't looking so hot. I will ask for sheets of acrylic for my birthday this summer and get a big summer job to help pay for this (6-700 dollars isn't that much for a summer job). I hope my hands stop doing this peel and bleed routine by then, it is getting really old.

Metronidazole (also misspelled as metrodazinole) aka Metro..

Is prazipro the easiest to find?
Seems to be the ones most LFS carry on-hand.. Seachem makes a pure powder form of Metro, which I ordered from Big-Al's.
And are the nematoads just something the rays deal with in the wild?
From what I've read and understand, that rays in the wild usually always have internal parasites. Being bottom dwellers, that feed on other bottom dwellers, the chances of them ingesting or encountering these parasites is very high. In the wild, under proper conditions and nutrition, their immune systems tend to keep these parasites under control. Just like how humans can be couriers of diseases, with immunities, but pass them to others with no immunities (see: pilgrims and indians, pox, etc..) So, take a ray, hook it in the mouth, stuff it in a tub, throw it in a glass box, put it in a bag, ship it around the world, dump it in new water parameters.. and "vwa-la", you have parasites taking over their intestinal system.

Hope that works Poop..

Sux about your hands.. I am having the same issue with an associate in my dept right now tooo.. looks like she might have to transfer or go back to Subway :(

I agree that a 6 x 4 x 2 would be great for retics. It would also be good for a couple of adult motoros (unless you get one that get's huge, though I've rarely seen them larger that 20").

As for meds for internal parasites, I've used Prazipro with success several times on rays.

I've also used nitrofurazone on rays for infection......seemed to work well, though they could have recovered on their own.

Ok I know this might sound weird, but I am actually kinda scared of motoros.

Aren't they pretty much way more outgoing and boisterous than any other ray? I have seen them eat huge fish on here (peacock bass, big angelfish, etc.).

I am just scared one would be too crazy and try to sting me or something. I dunno. Its stupid, but its still a fear.

But yeah miles that makes sense about them having parasites all the time. I will make sure to get some praxipro or metro before getting the ray to make sure its in good health. Thanks for the info, as always, you are a huge help.

Honestly your fear of motoros is unfounded. No need to worry about getting stung. Of course dont be stupid either!

I know, all fears are pretty much unfounded, like my girlfriend's fear of leopard geckos and corn snakes, but I am just so inexperienced with rays that I can picture myself cleaning the tank and looking away and have the ray sting me or something for being in his tank.

Thats how I felt about my flowerhorn, but I could just move my whole hand in his face and he knew I was bigger, so he wouldn't attack and he would let me clean in peace. I guess I played on their showmanship of dominance. But I am very familiar with how cichlids act and display, and I am not really sure how rays display dominance.

I guess thats mainly it.

Maybe after I study my retic's actions in person (I cannot find many videos on them) then I can understand its behavior, and maybe stingray's as a whole, more accurately.

Rays rarely sting unless you seriously piss them off like pushing down on them or something. Besides look at it this way...if you get stung youll go to the ER with some bad pain, get fixed up easily, and have a cool scar with a story to tell!

Haha, I can imagine running into an ER and actually getting quick treatment, "Help I was stung by a Potymotrygon motoro!"

Then they carefully pluck out the stinger and give me some antivenom or something.

Well that would probably never happen since ER's make you wait a looooong time before you can get in:irked:. I think they only time they let me in right away was when I dislocated my shoulder and tried to relocate it back in myself, and I think I made it worse.

Anyway, I have enough scars for now, err, forever.

I just was reading an aqua article about rays and it explained how they can sting you when they get excited because its feeding time and they lash their tails around. I thought that was so cute I almost threw up. It reminded me of a dog that wags its tail when you have a bone in your hand.

Here's that article, I am sure stingray fanatics have already read through it, but its a good short read none the less (just like all aqua articles).
