Could gar be kept in a 300 gallon with two motoro's and a black arowana?

I'm setting up a 180 as a growout for two motoros and a black arowana, and I would really like a gar.

But the problem is that the aro and rays would be in the 180 growout for about two years, and I afraid the gar would get way big faster then the aro and rays would...

This post was posted in anothert thread on the Gar Forum but I decided to make my own thread as not to derail badfish' thread... :nilly:

should be fine

what kind of gar all depends and what size are all your fish?

sounds like it would be fine though

Well most black aro's are sold at about 10'' so I was planning on getting the rays with a disk diameter of the samze size. So they will be anywere from 4-6''

I dont really know what type of Gar I could get.

If I were to only get one ray, would I be able to get more then one Gar?

Im just really interested in Gar!

a florida gar is probably your best bet. they reach about 2' in captivity. just use much caution when mixing fish w/ gar. even if they cant eat it they can kill it. honestly though floridas have a pretty docile personality and you should be ok. just try getting a gar that is around 10-12 inches so its not much bigger than the aro. also never put really aggressive fish in w/ gar. they are virtually defensless against aggressive fish species.
hope this helps

Well Im not getting rays now so... Woul I be able to get more then pne gar? I kind of wanted do like, on black aro,one shortnose gar,and one longnose.

I thought florida gars were the biggest? Or is the alligatore gar the biggest?

But since Im not getting the rays there would be more space in the 180 and in the 300 with out the huge rays.

go into google images and type in "florida gar"...then type in "Alligator gar" the gator gar is the largest of all the species of gar. it can get over ten foot in the wild! a long nose may also give you some problems ina 300 after it gets larger. they get pretty long and have a thinner more delicate body (more prone to spinal injury). the florida gar is one of the smallest species of gar along w/ the spotted and the tropical gar.

So do you think I could get away with keeping a black arowana, a florida, and maybe a spotted or two?

Thanks!

I was also thinking of getting the black arowana, and two florida gars? Or is a 300 gallon to small? I want atleast three fish in the tank and since it's better to keep 5-6 aro's together(wich I dont have space for) I was thinking I could keep two florida gars with the aro...

it depends on the footprint of the tank. what are your dimensions? the only thing about trying to get a spotted is they look almost exactly like a florida, but the florida makes up a very large majority of the gars sold in fish stores. your best bet will be a florida or two.

The tank Im buying is a 300 gallon from Glasscages.com (one of the glass ones, not acrylic)

They have a few different dimensions for the 300's. I reall dont know wich one to get as they all have different footprints but they equal 300 gallons!

Here is the link to the glass tanks:

The 300's are down near the botton.

Thank you for your help, the Florida Gar in your avatar is a monster!
