Would a gar do well with thse fish?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sounds like we have similar palns! eventually i would like to mix a nice clown knife into the picture!

The 375 definitely sounds like a great choice, the extra width will be great for the aro at full size, as well as the gar (my gar wasn't all tha flexible so wider is better).

If you want more fish in the tank I don't see a problem...if rays are out maybe something else that hangs out near the bottom, like some kind of cat, or a polypterus? Or just some other large, relatively un-aggressive fish...

I kind of ant a Tigrinus catfish, but I think it would just get way to big for my tank!

I was kind of thinking maybe, Three black arowanas, and three Gar. It would be an awesome combo! But I think it would be a little crowded.

Since aro's do better in a trio or more, Thats why I wanted three but, Black arowanas are exspensive! So I was thinking maybe one black arowana , two gar, and something else. I dont really know. I was thinking black arowana and THREE gar instead of two, but I still dont really know.

I still want rays, but I'm going to get them later when I have a job. (I'm only 14!) I buy my own tanks and fish, most of the time food, but sometimes my mom helps me out and ray's have pretty pricey diets! Always need to have perfect water, and you have to use ray safe chemicals.

And plus, Gars just look awesome!

i have a ray in w/ my gar and my aro will be joining them when it is big enough. aros also require excellent water conditions too so the two would really do well in the same tank. as for food they eat the same things as gars and aros so thats not a big deal either. i dont use meds on my ray. i use the salt and heat meathod. the only problem ive seen is my gar eats most of the food before the ray can get it. but now i just feed the gar from the surface and sink the worms for the ray. its been working great.

Is what I really want to do though is get is keep one Black arowana, two silver arowananas, and two florida gar in the 375! I think it would look stunning. lots of plant and pieces or driftwood about the tank bottom, but not alot. I still want some open bottom space because I have seen that some aro's/gars like to just chill on the bottom for a little bit.

I kinf of have my mind made up for stocking the 375. One Black Arowana. One Silver Arowana, Two Florida Gar, and one M Tingrinus for the bottom!

But in the 180 there will be a black arowana and florida gar.

I cant wait!

I just found out, I cannoy have gar.

They are a banned species.

Family Lepiosteidae: Gar-pikes: All members of the family.

So, no gar for me.

Im going to keep one black aro and two silver aro's with three p-bass in my 375...

just letting you know i got my 180 up and running. if youre still interested ill get pics of it when i have a chance.

i forgot to even check where you were located. gar are a no-no fish there. that sux!

I can have needle nose gar, but I do not like them at all!

It sucks alot that I cannot get a Gar! I want one so bad!

I would like to see pictures of your set-up anyways.

In my 375 Im doing a black aro, two silver aros, and one orino, one azul, and one mono p-bass!

that sounds cool! a 375 would be great to have. a 300+ gallon tankk is in my plans for the next few years. just need to get a damn house for myself first! LOL! right now in my 180 i just have my 17" florida gar and my stingray. my aro will join them in several months and id like to do a clown knife. when i get a chance i will get a few pics of it.

needle nose are a cool fish and kinda have that gar look, but are in no way the same as a true gar.

OH yeah! I have a Tropical Gar comming sometime within a week! he will eventually be in the 180 too!
