would a stingray be a nice addition?

that book ive ordered is supposed to be really good, so im gonna read that top to bottom and spend time staring at all the pictures lol. i love pictures of people with rays in their tank, they are the most fascinating fish ive seen so far in this community forum. they are truly monster and oddballs. i think more people would keep them if it werent for the large tank size they require, and food costs, but with beauty comes a price.

That and most people dont know that there are freshwater stingrays

In my experience, my rays enjoy sand a lot more than barebottom... Gives them something to hide in when scared and when full after feeding. Also gives them something to do all day (sift through the sand looking for food). Without sand they just kept climbing up and down the glass as though they were trying to escape..... I went from sand to barebottom then right back to sand.

I agree, my tanks all have sand in them to keep stress levels down (expecally new rays) , but i can understand why people keep barebottems as well.

doesnt sand pose a problem when trying to clean the tank though with using a syphon? i mean doesnt it get sucked up with alot of the stuff your trying to get rid of? although with the tank of that size, ill be using a canister filter to suck the water out of the tank at a pretty high rate, then switching the tubing places to replace the water right back in the tank.

you dont have to have alot of sand do you? ive seen some ray tanks with a pretty thick layer of sand, and that would be alot of bags of sand.

barebottom is mostly for ease of maintenance. but thats my main concern, is how to clean the sand during weekly maintenance.

you only want about an inch of sand covering the bottem.... if that.. if it is bigger then that rays cant sift through it enough to "clean" the tank. I have never had a amonia problem from not cleaning the sand, the rays seem to do a good enough job of stiring it up themselves but dont put more then an inch in

hmm maybe try it both ways... i use bare bottom and love it.... when cleaning sand you can just stir it and let your filter clear the water on lightly siphon with python...
