In my own little world
Here's a question for all you engineering types.

I have a friend who has a 3/4" thick 84"x42" clear glass table top, that he want's to get rid of and he'll give it to me to haul it off. The sheet has a pencil polished edge and no bevelling or fluting.

Would this piece of glass be okay for using in a DYI tank? Total tank size would be 88"x48"x46" for a total tank size of roughly 830G.

Thanks for any replies.

Yes, it would be the viewing window. The rest of the tank would be inch thick Marine Plywood.

I'd have preferred it to be a 36 inch wide piece of glass, but the table is 42 inches wide.

And I'm pretty sure that a 3/4 inch thick sheet of glass 7 feet long has to cost more than what this will cost me.

Oh, and for you possible responders, I don't know whether or not the table top is tempered glass (I would venture a guess it is, because of hot cookware being put on it), but the glass does not have any green sheen when viewed at an angle.

??? Well according to my friend the table is about 4 1/2 years old.

Also if the sheet is tempred as I suspect it is, I think trying to cut it in any matter other than water jet is going to result in about a gazillion pieces of glass.

Another thing that crossed my mind as I pondered this is... At 84"x46" would 1 inch thick marine plywood bow at all (ie. will the back wall of the tank bow)

i have never in my life heard of a glass table top being 3/4 of an inch thick.

I think you might want to go look at it and measure.

And also take some pics to show.

I have high doubts about it actually being 3/4''. That is close to the same thickness as a pack of smokes.

Hybrid, just because you maynot have ever heard of something, doesn't really mean anything. I'm surprised you even have internet service. It is 3/4 inch glass. Do a google search, there are lots of 3/4 inch glass table tops around. I believe they use glass that thick when the tables are over 6 ft. long because of the bowing between the pedestals.

12 Volt, yes it was an expensive table, but as I said it's being given to me so I really don't care how much it cost when it was bought. All I care about is it has no scratches or abrasions

I was pretty sure that the glass would be tempered because putting a hot pot or pan on it could have been disasterous.

Then post pics and prove me wrong, its that easy?

We just got internet here last week.
