Another thing that crossed my mind as I pondered this is... At 84"x46" would 1 inch thick marine plywood bow at all (ie. will the back wall of the tank bow)

1" plywood won't bow if it's reinforced with the correct framing. You're going to need to frame it. You might want to search other plywood tank builds to get some ideas.

i don't know if 3/4'' is thick enough for that size tank. i'm no expert but i would seriously pursue the answer to this before building so big

if you built the view window into a properly reinforced form there would be no issue I can see with using it

Remember, this guy wants to build the tank almost 4 feet high, with 3/4 inch glass, sorry no. I would do 3/4 at 30" tall, but not much more. If I were to go 46" tall I would use 1"-1.5" glass.

You could brace the center of the glass. It would suck to divide the viewing pane but, for the amount of $ you would be saving, it might be worth it.
Honestly, if it were me, I would just build it. You could make a partially filled vivarium and reserve the top 3rd of the tank for vegetation.

Thanks for that idea...I never thought of going the Vivarium route. That would be cool.

Well I just got off the phone with my buddy and he told me that the tabletop isn't tempered glass.

Surprised the heck out of me, I'd have thought it would just about have to be. But he said when his wife picked it out he asked the guy and was told that tempered isn't used because if something is dropped sharply onto it there is more possibility of shatter.

I don't know if the tempered v. non-tempered is significant towards what I'm thinking about but, it would seem that as 'plate' I should be able to have it cut to achieve a 36" depth in the tank.

What say ye?

Tempered glass can't be cut by a water jet, or any other method at all for that matter, FYI.

Heat strengthened glass can't be cut either, only annealed.
