Would like to take the hobby to another level, need a little help though!

I added my pleco from another tank...so far no problems.

ditto...as I've been reading, I've come to the understanding that acclimating the FH with a peaceful but stubborn fish such as a pleco would aid in his accepting other tankmates or mate (a chick). So far, he is very accepting and preety much could care less that he'd in there.

To slowly treat toleration of tank mates in preparation for adding a female

Good Idea :)

IMO adding a large pleco is actually asking for trouble, which is why I asked. The fact that a FH accepts a pleco doesn't equate to it accepting another cichlid, female, or not. That's what tank dividers were created for. It allows the prospective couple to get used to each other for a period of time, before you let them mingle. Even then, bad things can still happen, and sometimes very quickly.

Large plecos have large spines in their dorsal fins, and I've seen more than one FH (as well as other large aggressive CA's) get seriously injured when attacking a large pleco. The last time I saw this close up & personal it involved an adult male RT (that I previously owned), that ended up dieing when the wound (in this case in his mouth) became badly infected.

But hey, it's your fish.

I can see both sides to this argument, but you could get a different result ten times out of ten

Right, and it only takes 1 time out of 10 to F up a perfectly healthy FH.

IMO if you want to test drive tank mates, use something that isn't capable of placing your FH in harms way.

And FYI weiners, not all plecos are peaceful. Some can be down right nasty when push comes to shove.

This is very true, some plecos will NOT tolerate being harassed. You make a very valid point.

In this case, I did not purchase a large pleco as I said I was going to do previously. . I simply brought him from my other tank and he is only 3-4 ". In regards to him tolerating a pleco and not another cichlid is a very plausible point. In fact, I am going to use a divider. I just have to devise one for my tank, as the concrete background causes problems. The pleco is just to help him grasp other living things in his tank and not to shock him not only with a divider, but with a tankmate as well. So, we'll see what happens...just have to figure out a good idea for a divider. Any ideas?????
