Would You Do It?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think it's sort of the same thing... baby bowfin are VERY sensitive, and as we know baby cubans are as well. Mixing them just seems too risky, especially if one of them hits a growth spurt before the other.

I wouldn't keep a baby cuban with other predators until it was around 10-12", but that's just me.

thanks, man. I'll move them as soon as i can. I didn't set up a new tank yet because I really didn't want to and I wanted to see what size the fish were in comparison to my others before deciding where to put them. That and I'm trying to move into the basement so I can rent out my upstairs and am just going to have to move tanks again, lol. If my damn cat wouldn't mess with my tanks, I could use the lower tier of my double stand, but I'm left with less space. Here I go ranting again, lol.

put a divider in for those poor baby amia's and dont get the pike thats how i see it anyway!

but then again id choose bowfin over cubans any day of week....

Haha... no worries... there is never enough tanks and when dealing with a special fish it sucks having to find a way to isolate it.

I have a 20g running right now for just such a purpose and it drives me nuts.

So, I throw the bowfin in with the p-bass and the biggest one tries to eat one even though they're just a little bigger than the smallest p-bass, so I have to take them out immediately and of course the gar tries to eat one, but lets go almost immediately. Do you think bowfin about 3" will be alright to keep with the 7" gar (obviously if they grow differently it won't work)? I don't think at this point it will try to eat them again, but maybe so. I'll just keep a bunch of FHM in with them and hope they grow fast enough to move them. Then, I put the pickerel in my 120 (bigger than I thought it was going to be) as it's just a little too small for the 210 as there's a big TT eel in there and the male moto of course is picking on it so I get pissed and throw all the cichlids and SD's from the 120 into the 300. I don't think anyone will get eaten, but it's a risk. I was eventually going to do this, but wanted to wait 'til they were a little bigger. Luckily, the biggest fish won't eat feeders.

/rant (a poorly written one at that)

That is kind of amazing. While the predation was out of control in baby LNG and baby Bowfins, it seemed by far more specific than co-specific.

Both are outrageous cannibalistic, and I have had cases of baby LNG eating other baby LNG as they outgrow, and likewise with the bowfin eating other baby bowfin.

I have only had a gar eat a bowfin once, and it was something along the lines of the LNG at 14" vs. Bowfin @ 6".

I am real surprised that you have had such success at maintaining no specific aggression raising numerous baby bowfin!

pike is happy now in a tank full of bichirs and a BGK only. I'm going to grab a cheap 10 gallon to put the bowfin in...leaving right now.

init i mean my two males stunned every one when they were in com at adult size in full breeding colouration. 2males cohabiting like this is unheard of... like a tame wal it hardly ever happens in fact...

a large group of 3" amias will prob in a 120 turn into 3 fat amia's in a month and so then it would be survival of the strongest from then on out untill the is only one. that is typical for young amia.

Totally agree. Mine have seemed to totally cease their cannibalism and seriously reduce their specific aggression once they 7 - 8 inch range. I have not looked into "sexing" my amia, but since I have nothing in the way of "coloration" (just interesting patterns) mine may very well all be female?

oh yall know if mature adult goes into season! excuse old pic but they in sump atm and pics are hard to aquire...
