Would You Do It?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I was told small ones do better in groups of 3, so that's why I got 3...was just going to get one, but I'm glad I have a couple in case I lose one. No big deal, though: if they get aggressive towards each other I'll split them up or sell one. Hopefully they'll grow fast and I can put them in different tanks.

Haha... no worries... there is never enough tanks and when dealing with a special fish it sucks having to find a way to isolate it.

I have a 20g running right now for just such a purpose and it drives me nuts.
yeah, I hate small tanks, too, lol

That seems to be seriously stunted growth rate, or I am witnessing an extremely uncommon growth rate in my baby Bowfin collection I got last summer.

I got my bowfins around 4", (I have to look up the purchase date at home to be certain, but I know it was at least late April to early June)!

I had one die in late September from jumping out of my deck pond when I had the 1"x1" netting as a cover (now covered by 0.5"x0.5" netting). I took pictures of the dead bowfin next to a tape measure (can post this evening when I get home from work) and in was over 13" long from head to tail!

I was under the impression that my 4" bowfins were babies only a couple months old! I am under the impression that my bowfin are still under a year old, but I don't have ANY of my YOY bowfin anywhere near as short as a foot long!

How can a two year old bowfin be under 12" without severe stunting, or am I endangering my young bowfins from massive overfeeding?
