When you put everything in perspective, that's my only fear especially when you suggest stuff like making their contribution "public" by making their name a different color.

This thread has probably been a bit of an eye opener though as that's alot more votes for yes then i was expecting even though they're currently 4 behind the No votes
honestly im surprised at how many NO answers there are. i would have thought more people would want to support the site. ill tell you one thing though, im glad Li is the one running this site. even if i had the money to pay the out-of-pocket expenses, i wouldnt do it. i would have changed a lot of things. Li's passion and love for the hobby is the reason we're all here if you think about it. And for those that say they wouldnt pitch in a measely $1 a month, well I just dont get it.

and while i'm on this topic about how great Li is to run this whole thing, I remember a few months back a forum was having several issues with costs, member drama, etc (not a fish forum). then one day out of the blue the owner shut the whole site down. no warning, nothing. the whole site was gone, all the posts, threads, pictures, information, GONE! and nobody was able to ever retrieve any of it again. needlessly to say it shocked the entire community that followed that site. not saying that will happen here, but it's just something to think about.

I dont want that to happen  When MFK was off like a couple of months ago I couldn't eat or sleep! I tried and tried so many times to see if MFK would work. The server going off a day or two is fine but when its gone forever, idk what other fish forum I would go to. On other fish forums ive registered is not as cool as MFK. On other forums im so lost because they mostly like to talk about little fishes like guppys and platy's. I need to talk about MFK'ing. Plus i like the people here :) More friendly and hilarious at times. Ill support :)

In my opinion this could be a plausible ideal for some forums, but whether or not it is good for this forum is a question i can not pronounce alone. Now i do not think this is idea contains as much positive as it does negative because well this system would build a hierarchy structure, which may discourage members one time or another like stated earlier. It would eventually lead to situations involving reputation and power and well by default and hypothetically it should go to the greater member. Now this is my idealist view of the cause at hand whether or not it is a valid example, that depends but for the time being let it be.

Now i do understand that the perks involved with a premium membership may out weigh the negatives in some stances (i.e donations to promote the community, better maintenance and possibly more mfk sponsored events) but it may do some harm aswell, many people may leave, more issues and complaining in the forums just to name a couple. So all in all like this thread states submit your view.

But good idea J.

I guess i don't have a problem with "premium memberships" but i'd have a problem with people treating those people like it's a higher class.
Higher class? I don't think so. What they paid for? Yes. Personally, I see it no different than a Flickr or Photobucket account. You can join for free and use the services like anyone else but if you pay a small fee, you receive a pro account which gives you extras like more storage space, allows you to upload much larger images and gives you ad-free browsing and sharing etc. I have never seen it create a hierarchy in peoples attitudes towards each other in those communities. I think most would treat it the same as a members post count and realise it means very little.
