So Wednesday evening I brought home my little BGK and two peacock eels (Pics to follow asap, my BGK is shy) Since I am currently holding them in a 10gal until the 60gal arrives, I had to borrow a filter from my neighbor who is not using her tank of the same size. Now, I unfortunately didn't notice the bottom of the pipe where the water goes in is wide open, I only saw the slits on the side and figured that's where the water was sucked through.

Can you guess where this is going?

That same night I heard the filter screech, after taking a look, I noticed an eel was missing. For some reason neither of them wants to burrow in the sand, they just like to chill on top and around the wood, so I knew he wasn't in the tank. Sure enough, I opened up the filter and saw his tail sticking out, he was twisted and jammed up inside the little chamber where the turbine was. Thought he was dead at first but he somehow managed to live through that and I eventually got him out. He seemed okay but there was a patch of missing skin/scales on his side that has been seemingly getting worse. He still swims around a little, eating I'm not sure because I haven't seen either of them eat yet, but lately I noticed when he sits at the bottom of the tank now I might catch him laying more on his side, like he's doing right now :(

I really adore my eels and I don't want to have to replace him, is there anything I can do? I'll be going to my LFS today for bloodworms and can pick up meds if necessary.

You could get some melafix . It will help keep it from getting infected. Do a 50% water change about 2x a week also until it clears up.

I ended up getting some Methylene Blue, caught the eel and applied it directly to the wound. I do have some Melafix handy from about 3 years ago, but I can't find the expiry date on the bottle. Is it no good?

Dont think its still good after 3 years. Its not really a must have. The main thing is just to keep it from getting infected so just keep the water clean. It should heal pretty fast. I had a bichir do the same thing years ago and he turned out fine.

Good to know. Should I dose him with the Methylene Blue again tomorrow or just leave it at that and see if he manages to pull through on his own?

I would give him a day or two and see how me looks. If it doesnt seem to have started healing treat again. Just watch out for fungus.

My eel didn't make it. I kind of expected this, but I'm pretty bummed regardless. Guess I'll have to go pick up another one :(

Sorry I didn't catch this earlier.. But when one of my eels got attacked by the filter.. I just used clean water ( lots of 20% water changes. 0-0-20ppm or less) and gave him as much food as he could eat and often. and kept him in a tank by himself so no competition for food or aggression from tank-mates. Hopefully you won't have need of this again.
