I used Quickrete playsand from home depot. $8 for 100 pounds. Just wash it with a pillow case and it should be good. My tank cleared in one night.

thx for posting that..i live right next to home depot..helps i have a family member that works there..any idea how many pounds to fill a 180 gallon tank? 6x2x2

That all depends on how thick you want your substrate

I am using 100lbs for my 80g. So maybe 4 - 6 (50lbs) bags.

A thin layer is easier to clean than a thick one. I would buy 100 lbs., put 50 lbs. in the tank, and add more as needed. I probably wouldn't use the entire 100 lbs. If your local "Home Dumpster" store sells pool supplies, they probably have pool filter sand. I've heard some have it, some don't. The reason it would be my first choice, is because it's much cleaner out of the bag than many other types of sand. Remember that it's a lot easier to handle dry sand than wet. Wet sand is heavy, and sticks to everything. In the past, I've just dumped it in the tank dry, fill the tank half way , stir with a stick, and drain 2 or 3 times, and it's ready to fill all the way and use. There is usually a bit of very fine dust that comes out, and once that's cleared out, you're good.
