I had to choose convict. This is going to sound weird , but dats are way too common, it seems like about 2/3 of the members on here with 200+ gallon tanks own them. They don't seem that appealing to me, they have nice colors but I find them to be kind of boring. They would be nice in a group for a community setup, but they get too big and would eventually require a 400+ gallon tank. IMO, convicts are more interesting, have nicer colors (sometimes) and can be kep in tanks as small as 10 gallons. I think many people on here get too caught up in the trends and start buying fish just because they are popular, rather than getting the fish that they truely like. I understand that many people do buy dats because they like them and they don't care about what everyone else has, but many others will just buy them because that's what everyone else has and that's what everyone else talks about; I think it is just a waste of money when there are so many nicer fish that you can get for under ten bucks.

Convicts are a bit more common but I've seen Indonesian tigers at lots of chain stores for like $12..

Datnoides look like they would be excellent to eat though.. siamese tiger sandwich, anyone? I guess dats have cons beat in the "Human Consumption" category but cons win any other time

^LOL yeah, they look like white-meat fish with big slab-sided fillets. But anywho, I like a few Datnoides... Thinbars and Silvers are cool... but even with them, I'll take a Convict. But I don't think saying Datnoides are overrated Convicts means comparing Convicts to Datnoides. If I say Corvettes are overrated Hondas, does that mean I am saying that Hondas are better? (Penance to the Corvette gods, haha)

Eventhough I would probably only buy convict cichlids to use as feeder breeders it is good to see that such a relatively cheap fish is so popular in the MFK community.

I think that the Datnoids are grossly overated. I have three < 2" fry that are very skittish. They are great eaters but have not seemed to grown since I got them in December. The Convicts that I raised from fry all easily doubled in size from the 1" to 2" range in half the time with less then half the food intake.

A fish that non-stop eats, never poops and does not grow. Something is just plain wrong with these damn things!

Never kept dats but Convicts are just boring. Pesonally I would love to keep some dats, Convicts are just cheap fish. That's just my opinion though.

Convicts are way too common around here, any fish that can be sold at a Petsmart doesn't appeal to me too much. I'd rather buy a unique fish that noone has or a Monster. I just picked up a 17 inch channel catfish....not in LFS's around here at least.
