Just to make it more difficult to decide on which brand, there is a Canon rebate for the 40D, $200, also there is a rebate for the 5D but can't recall how much I think it was around $400 or something.

I've been playing around with friends' cameras for the last few days. I think I've ruled out the Nikon just based on the fact that all my friends shoot Canon and have lenses I can either borrow or buy at a steal. Now I'm torn between the 30D and XTi. I'm leaning towards the XTi just because I'll have a couple hundred bucks left over for glass. Input?

I shoot with an XTI an honestly wish I would have sprung for the 30D and am now looking for a 40D to move up too-

The xti is a great beginner cam-----But one will out grow it quickly if photography is something some one is really considerring getting into....

Glass is the most important.......And certainly dont get wrapped up into the hype of purchaseing filters.....
Also seems that haveing a remote flash setup is almost a must when shooting fish....

Sorry I didn't add much info....

No apologies necessary. In all honesty, the XTi's reputation as a "beginner SLR" doesn't phase me in the least. I'd rather not strain myself financially at this point and have the opportunity to sell the camera and buy a new one when I'm ready. These things seem to hold onto their value pretty well, so I'm not terribly concerned. Aside from the kit lense, which lenses are worth checking into?

(PS I'm totally clueless when it comes to lenses. Are there any websites that break down and show examples of the differences between 18-55, 10-300, etc?)

L series lenses (by canon) are a good one to look into-But they carry a heafty price tag also....But well worth the money....

I love my 100mm F2.8 macro....(canon)...
I also have no clue if a site like that exists Sir......Asking n e and all ?'s you might have is a good start....
Also knowing what you want to do in photography will help one select the right lenses for them.....Lighting conditions will also play a big roll into selecting lenses...

Thanks for the input AK! I've been browsing photography-on-the.net all morning and think its exactly what I'm looking for.
