This is what I was able to come up with. Read it and see what you get from it. It could be a Patuitary problem caused by an autoimmune system malfunction as the underlying cause.

Melanogenesis
Within the (melanin) cell resides thousands of granules of pigment. This is how fish and more commonly amphibians change colour to evade predators. They are stimulated by adrenalin; migrate to the center of the cell, and thus lightening the colour of the skin tissue. The cell can also disperse the pigment making a darker colouration. The pigments can also be agitated by other chemicals in the body. Black Pigment cells (ormelanophores) respond to the presence of Leukine (a chemical used to attract fibroblasts, the cells used to repair damaged tissue.) Consequently the containing cell goes black, rather than just darker or lighter when the pigment migrates.
The control and mechanics of rapid pigment translocation has been well studied in a number of different species, particularly amphibians and fish. It has been demonstrated that the process can be under hormonal, neuronal control or both. Neurochemicals that are known to translocate pigment include noradrenaline, through its receptor on the surface on melanophores. The primary hormones involved in regulating translocation appear to be the melanocortins, melatonin and melanin concentrating hormone (MCH), that are produced mainly in the pituitary, pineal gland and hypothalamus respectively. These hormones may also be generated in a paracrine fashion by cells in the skin. At the surface of the melanophore the hormones have been shown to activate specific G-protein coupled receptors that, in turn, transduce the signal into the cell. Melanocortins result in the dispersion of pigment, while melatonin and MCH results in aggregation.

Doesn't look good for the poor fellow. The spot at the corner of his lip and on his tail fin doesn't look good either.Possibly columnaris or something?

Had a pearsei do the same thing,he stayed that way for a few days than one morning he was back to normal. It was strange because he was fine one minute and had the black on one side the next and changed back just as fast.Would like to know what could have cause it also but no one seemd to have a really good answer.
