When I started, we had sick tanks set up in the back, but about a month before I left we were told to take them down and just to euthanize any sick fish (freeer). Not even going to talk about small animals and birds . . . Pretty much all pet stores are relying on their dry goods sales to make ends meet and not their livestock unless they do a good business with valuable exotics or sell cats and dogs.

Large chain stores are usualy run by centralized bean counters who look at the profit margin above all else. Chain petstores are very standardized and the various outlets have to deal with central policy also but in their defense a lot of them are run and staffed by people who do care. Small lfs tend to run on real tight budjets unless they can find a market niche so they are often run by people who truly love the hobby, most exceptions to this rule don't stay in business very long.
It is also a lot easier to get a small business prosecuted than a chain like walmart.

example- Ipod's are made in china i believe, and nearly every one of my friends that had it returned it at least once, my brother returned it 4 times before he got one that actually worked right, cept mine, mine work the day i got it and it still work to this day
Thats not the point....I was talking about sweatshops. How do you think Wal-mart can sell things for so cheap? They have people make them for virtually no pay at all in awful conditions.
As for Petsmart...I love my local Petsmart. I have only lost two fish I got from there and one was killed so it was not their fault. Most of their fish appear to be very healthy and in great shape.
lol me and my buddy where in a walmart laughing at how horrible thier setups where when we saw a little kid in a stroller slapping one of the goldfish tanks.... i would have done somthing if his mother didnt look like such a crackwhore kindha felt bad for the little guy. as we where leaving the fish section i heard some little $hit say QUOTE "anyone who adores fish is stupid" i would have done somthing but AGAIN he was like 10 years old + he seemed incredibly uninfourmed about what being a gangster is and how to act in a public place they where playing dodgeball with the balls in one of those big bins and throwing basketballs all over the place. the store was a total mess everywhere and it looked like they where way short of staff the communinty the store was locatd at was GHETTO to the max ........ i dont intend on going back EVER

The sell crap for cheap because they are the largest store out there. They can get the biggest wholesale discount because they buy the most. They have the most efficient distribution system which helps too. Not because the items are from 3rd world countries.
