That really sucks Boggy. I think its a right of passage when keeping these fish as juvs to lose a couple. It sucks even more for you guys in Europe due to the rare import of these guys. Keep your chin up man, losing a few in the beggining makes getting one to full grown that much sweeter. Its what we do
Yeah i sold the last ones in the shop aswell.

It really sucks but im not gona get bogged down in it.

Thanks mate, Thats why i love the big boy. He may only be a monoc but big cichla over here are a rare thing indeed.:D

sorry for your loss bro, if everything fine with the other tem, it dfinately sounds like he died from over eating..

I had a similar thing happen, fish were all eating, next day swimming out of control, hour later dieing. Question, how long has the tank been setup? If it is a new setup and water, there is a lack of bacteria which will cause ammonia levels to rise, until there are enough nitrates etc to balance everything out including the PH. Usually takes 2 weeks. In my case I let the system run for 48 hrs then added 20 babies, I lost 5 in 3 days until I realized that I had no bacteria. Hope this helps, I am not sure of your experience with any kind of fish.

Is it possible that the food, after soaking up some water, expands? If the fish ate as much as they could and then the food were to expand beyond that in the gut...

Twice I have found one of my kelberi swimming erratically after stuffing itself with feeder fish. Scared the bejeezus out of me. I used to just dump a couple hundred feeders in the tank and let the fish eeat them as they wanted. Now I just drop in a few at a time and wait before adding more. The fish can always eat more in a few hours. No need to feed them until they are stuffed and risk bloating the fish.
