WTF is this business

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Tacky. Thats the first thing that comes to mind.

Agreed it is rather tacky.

Blood parrots...flowerhorns...glowing cichlids..seems to be all along the same artificial manipulation BS line to me.

I wouldn't put fluorescent fish on the same level as Blood Parrots and Flowerhorn. Fluorescent fish are either genetically modified or dye injected while Flowerhorn and Blood Parrots are merely inbred a lot.

this ish makes me sick....

Pretty sure that was discovered to be fake and not real ray.

I can't find the video but there is also fluorescent pink convicts. I could see them being injected but I know that they have created angels like that overseas.

With a couple of exceptions CA and SA cichlids can not hybridize. In this case pertaining to Convects and Angelfish they Can not hybridize. Read the link provided it should help explain why and how some fish can while others can't.

Agreed, been saying this for awhile. Your link is just more scientific than mine lol

Maybe south and centrals don't hybrize, but centrals from Mexico will with Costa Ricans or Guatamalans.
Cyanoguttatum will with trimac, trimac with Midas, and as we all see on this site, confusion over which Vieja is which, because someone crossed bifas with hartwegi or some other Vieja and dropped the cross at a LFS.
Hard to find out what you've got unless you buy from a reputable person like Rapps, or some others here with integrity.

Fluorescence is fun!

There's a variety of methods that could have been employed here. If they know where to insert the gene in the zebrafish, they could have searched for a homologous region in the convict/angelfish genome and insert it there. Alternatively, they might have sequenced their genomes, though ncbi doesn't have anything on that. Thirdly, it could have been just a random insert by using a transposable-element or something of the sorts.

Who knows. :P

Ahhhh but wouldn't the genome have to be mapped to search for a homologous region? Or do they just digest the DNA with the same enzymes and calculate the length of the resulting DNA strands through electrophoresis migrating distance and hope it's the same? I'm not too familiar with DNA cloning/insertion/etc.

Lol anyway, it's neat regardless of how they did it! I just don't understand the practical use for it aside from enjoying it in aquaria. I mean bioluminescence itself isn't useless, who knows, maybe a better understanding of the energetic relationship could lead to discoveries in renewable energy! But I know these aren't dyed or injected though.

Stingray leather is somewhat commonly used in shoes, I've seen it with limited edition Vans vault shoes myself. I don't agree with growing and farming animals for accessories or clothing, but growing and farming animals to repeatedly consume and literally poop out later isn't really much better. I'm not a vegetarian, but realistically, we overlook a lot of animal cruelty for the sake of our taste buds!

1. All Central American Cichlids can hybridize with any other Central American Cichlid - Until it is proven otherwise, assume all Central Americans can hybridize with one another.

2. All Central American Cichlids can hybridize with any Hybrid Central American Cichlid - Most commercially sold hybrid cichlids are of Central American descent and should be considered Hybrid CA Cichlids. This includes Parrot Cichlids, Flowerhorn Cichlids, and Red Texas Cichlids.
Exception to the rule: Sterility occurs in hybrid cichlids commonly in males and occasionally in female, Parrot Cichlids being a great example of this as nearly ever single male is sterile. A sterile parent will not produce viable fry.

3. No South American Cichlid can hybridize with any Central American Cichlid - Until it is proven otherwise, assume that no South American Cichlids can not hybridize with any Central American. No South American Cichlid has ever been confirmed to successful hybridize with any Central American Cichlid, any case of this happening successfully has been word of mouth.
Exception to the rule: Cichlasoma Festae can successfully hybridize with any Central American Cichlid. Cichlasoma Festae is essentially a Central American Cichlid living in South America.

4. No South American Cichlid can hybridize with any other South American Cichlid - Until it is proven otherwise, assume that South American Cichlids can not hybridize with any South American. No South American Cichlid has ever been confirmed to successful hybridize with any South American Cichlid, any case of this happening successfully has been word of mouth.
Exception to the rule: Same genus South American Cichlid can potentially hybridize with one another. For example a Green Terror (Aequidens Rivulatus) can hybridize with a Blue Acara (Aequidens pulcher).

Some of my lfs have gotten in hybrid Bifas being sold as Synspilum. It can be ridiculous to find a pure version of a fish if you aren't ordering from reputable source. I would love nothing more than to be able to go into a local store and buy pure Citrinellus.

If they're able to make mammals glow with genetic engineering, I don't see how they can't do it with fish. (not that I'm saying they're not injected, they very well might be). I'm not surprised at all at this. They've been doing this to everything. The vegetables that seem to be available all year round, the steaks from cows that grow fat in half the time. So many things have genetic engineering done to them.
