yeah, a hydra- I had some in myh tank, but unfortunately for them, it was teh convict tank...CHOMP:owned:

you can sell hydra culture to clueless schoolteachers

That critter is a hydra. It usually gets introduced by hitchhiking on plants or in live foods. They do have stinging nematocysts on their tentacles and can capture fish fry. Their usual diet is much smaller, though. Hydra reproduce asexually (budding).
Removing hydra can be accomplished by several means:
1. Removing your fish and raising your tank temp to 106F for 48 hours.
2. Fluke tabs has been found to be highly effective in eradicating hydra.
3. Hydra are intolerant of salt. A salt concentration of only 0.3 to 0.5% will kill them off.

There's a cheap hydra-eater, easily found: the opaline gourami. These guys eat hydras very quickly, and love it. It's a good choice when you can't do any of the means posted by Oddball. :D
