Most plecos will eat meat if offered the chance. Most species offered in the hobby as "common plecos" eat meat. The last two that have gotten big have for me. Once they hit the 16-18" range they become crazed killers.

one of my gibbys did it. just something some plecos do. some do it because they dont have enough protien, others just cause they try it and like it. if it ever happens, you have to remove one of them immediately, cause itll never stop

it happened to me on an asian sole, the large surface area and being a bottom dweller, just something it obviously cant resist. i was pissed at the time, but luckily, i caught it early, as i was expecting it to happen, and it wasn't a problem as i split them immediately and got it to recover. however the pleco has never done it before or since this incident. however for me, this enforced the no plecos with rays rule...

Is it a pink convict or the black con? Back when I had a monster killer plec when he would attack fish (which was very odd to watch) you would wake up in the morning with a fish with 1-3 big round spots on its side. Of course this plec didn't stop with just the slime coat.

it was a black con i had him about a year bought him when he was still a baby.
evil vampire slime sucking pleco.

I have two sailfin plecos, ranging in size from 4" to 6" and they have never "sucked" on another fish. Keep them occupied by throwing in some blanched zucchini - they love it! Or you can try hanging some fresh spinach in the tank on a clip - they will go to town!

When they are that small they have a very small need for protein, however when they get bigger they will need protein in their diet, and will search it out.
