Please review and tell me if I can use this chart? Or do I need to buy a co2 test kit? The problem I have is I can only order co2 test kit on the Internet, and I would have to pay just as much for ship as I would for the test kit.

I don't have any Fish or CO2 in the tank yet, just light, water, aquatic soil, and plants. However some of the plants leaves are turning translucent.

I currently have a API pH test kit, and I am about 75% sure I saw a API kH test, although it could have been gH. I will check and know for sure tomorrow, at the LFS.

im not an expert on this, but ive read that these charts wont give you an accurate reading of your co2 levels in the tank. well actually, the chart is accurate, but the kh readings you get from your tank can be influenced by a number of different factors, thus not giving you an truely accurate kh reading and therefore not giving you accurate co2 readings.

i think the best think you can do is get a drop checker and fill it with some 4dkh solution. not sure if i explained this right, maybe somebody else can chime in

and yes, API sells a kits that test kh and gh

If you aren't injecting co2, then you don't need to check the levels, just make sure there is plenty of surface agitation. That chart is effective, but you have to see what your pH and KH values are in the morning before co2 starts, then check the drop in pH and watch the KH. This will give you your co2 levels, roughly.

WEll I am starting co2 injection this week, and I knew fish should be be kept in or under 20ppm co2. So I need to know how much co2 is in the tank.

I am trying to setup a reaction co2. I am using 3 liter soda bottle, 3 cups of sugar 3/4 TBS of dry active yeast, and 2 pinches of baking soda.

All my plants are dying and I’m trying my best to save them. Some are turning translucent others are wilting.

Here is all the info I have, on my two tanks that are connected to the same sump.

24x16x12 Filled to the brim

1 1/2 inches of sand/Schultz :: Aquatic Plant Soil

1 24" 75 watt florescent grow light over each tank, 6 inches above the surface.
pH 6.8
Ammonia > .25ppm but not .50ppm
NitrIte > 0ppm but not .25ppm
NitrAte 10ppm

I have no fish, and failed on my first attempt at a diy co2 generator, and have not used any fertilizer yet. Please tell me what info you need from me to help me, Pictures, video, more test, ect.

Side note, I put some Pothos in the tank 3 days ago and they look awsome; Ill look at my sales ticket when I get home and get the name of the other two plants I got from pet smart.

The Pothos have a special place in my heart, I started them from 1 clipping at my old job, they grew like a weed inside the building. When I quite I took them home put them in a window seal and forgot about them for 7 months. After 7 months of low light and no water they looked a little rough, I moved them to a new pot and put them outside, where the rain almost killed them. So I moved them in side and let them dry for about 3 weeks and they bounced right back. These are like the super man of plants.

What kind of plants do you have? Reaction co2 isn't going to help your plants, if they are dying from inadequate light, and/or inadequate nutrients.

I think i found the problem, I was tricked by wally world, the box said 75 watts, but when i checked the bulb its only 17watt!!!!!. I will need to get some real lights, can you suggest something where i wont have to spend 200 or 300 dollars?
