Description

Opening February is Kuhlia rupestris, a widespread and euryhaline perch-like fish belonging to the family Kuhliidae, of which Kuhlia is the only described genus. Kuhlia is a relatively small, though fairly widespread genus found throughout much of the world’s warm waters, ranging everywhere from freshwater to marine. Kuhlia rupestris in particular, despite spawning and developing in marine conditions, usually spend their lives in freshwater or brackish environments.

Description

Neosilurus brevidorsalis is a very interesting and rarely-traded catfish found in Oceania. These fish are rather hardy. They belong to the family Plotosidae, which consists of somewhat eel-like catfish found in freshwater, brackish, and marine conditions. Roughly half of this family is found primarily in freshwater.

Description

Closing month three is Atractosteus tristoechus, one of the rarest gars available. These hardy, primitive fish are known exclusively from Cuba, and are closely related to Atractosteus spatula, the alligator gar, which is not only the largest gar in the world, but also one of the largest freshwater fish in general. Like all gars, these fish are known to sometimes breathe air.
