Crocodile Toothpick Fish
Indostomus crocodilus

Size: 1.25"
pH: 5.5-7.0
Tank size: 10G/1 small group
Country of origin: Thailand, Malaysia
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Very peaceful and fragile. Easily outcompeted
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Indostomus crocodilus, not to be confused with the aforementioned Indostomus paradoxus, is an unusual fish that is, contrary to what I previously believed, less closely related to seahorses, pipefish, and sticklebacks, and instead closer to swamp eels and spiny eels. These fish are very delicate and are best kept in a species tank. Though they do not need to be kept in groups, it is most likely for the better, as due to the fragile nature of this fish, it's entirely possible that one or two will perish prematurely. These fish, for one, are rather weak swimmers, and for two, could easily be sucked up by the average HOB, and therefore require special filtration. Baby brine shrimp and Daphnia make excellent foods.

Tiger Moray Eel
Gymnothorax polyuranodon

Size: 2’ [Sometimes over 3’!]
pH: 7.5-8.0
Tank size: 100G/Individual
Country of origin: Sri Lanka, Indonesia, New Guinea, Philippines, Fiji, Papua, Australia, New Caledonia, Vanuatu
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Very predatory and aggressive, though may coexist with faster, larger fish if well-fed
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.000-1.025 [May depend on catch location-- Around 1.010 is generally preferred]

Description

For the longest time, I was debating over whether or not I should include this moray on this thread. However, their presence in landlocked freshwater ponds, and the habit of some populations to live their entire lives in freshwater has convinced me. I think this species should generally be considered a brackish eel, however, in a very well-maintained freshwater aquarium with a high pH, Gymnothorax polyuranodon has the ability to thrive. It is the only somewhat regularly-traded moray to have this ability.

I’m getting one of these soon and cannot wait. They are awesome and can’t wait. They are actually super friendly to other larger fish.
