Four-Eyed Fish
Anableps anableps

Size: 8”
pH: 7.5-8.0
Tank size: 90G/1 small group
Country of origin: From Trinidad and Venezuela to Brazil
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Predatory, though relatively peaceful
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.005-1.015

Description

Anableps anableps is a unique surface-dwelling livebearer found throughout much of South America’s northeastern coast. They do best in groups. They may also be able to live in full freshwater or full marine conditions, though this is not advised, and is not proven by any concrete evidence. Though they were once relatively common in aquariums, they are now much rarer than they once were. Most aquarium specimens come from Brazil.

Bullseye Pufferfish
Sphoeroides annulatus

Size: 1’
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 125G/Individual
Country of origin: Countries throughout North and South America
Diet: Live and frozen foods. It is imperative that you provide some sort of hard food
Temperament: Aggressive, though may tolerate large, fast fish
Temperature: 75-80° F
sg: 1.010-1.025

Description

Sphoeroides annulatus is an infrequently-kept American pufferfish that often lives in freshwater conditions when young, though eventually migrates to brackish and marine conditions. They often inhabit rocky reefs in the wild, and therefore do best in a well-decorated tank with plenty of places to lodge.

Atlantic Stingray
Dasyatis sabina

Size: 2’Lx1’W
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 220G/Individual
Country of origin: United States, Mexico
Diet: Live and frozen foods
Temperament: Generally calm. Very predatory and will eat any fish small enough. Known to be rather personable, and quite intelligent by fish standards
Temperature: 60-80° F
sg: 1.010-1.025 [Possibly down to 1.000-- Though, this is unrealistic for most specimens]

Description

This profile may be a tad iffy-- stay with me. Dasyatis sabina is a North American stingray, that is, by many means, a true freshwater stingray. However, freshwater specimens only exist in certain areas, and keeping these fish in freshwater can prove incredibly difficult, due to the amount of waste they produce in lower salinities. They are, in fact, best regarded as a marine fish. Those that inhabit freshwater have developed in pure freshwater for a very long time without leaving, while the marine and brackish specimens rarely if ever even so much as enter it. These rays are very plentiful in the wild, and make a popular choice for touch tanks at public aquariums.

Altipinna Tetra
Rhoadsia altipinna

Size: 7”
pH: 7.0-8.0
Tank size: 75G/1 small group
Country of origin: Ecuador
Diet: Live and frozen foods, as well as sturdier dry foods such as pellets
Temperament: Peaceful among conspecifics, though aggressive towards other fish
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Rhoadsia altipinna is a characin that is very rare in the aquarium trade. Interestingly, these fish, despite having been described a very long time ago, do not have a common name. The one I assigned is simply my own interpretation. These fish are similar to their relatives, the piranhas, in the sense that, though they get along rather well with others of their species, they are extremely aggressive towards most other species.

Ornate Pim
Pimelodus ornatus

Size: 1’
pH: 6.0.-7.0
Tank size: 150G/1 small group
Country of origin: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina
Diet: Most live, frozen, and prepared foods of an appropriate size will suffice
Temperament: Peaceful, though predatory and robust. Best kept with larger tankmates.
Temperature: 75-80° F

Description

Reaching about a foot in length, Pimelodus ornatus is one of the larger pim catfish currently in the trade. They are found throughout much of South America. Much like the aforementioned Pimelodus maculatus, these fish are often overshadowed by the very popular Pimelodus pictus. Like their relatives, these fish must be kept in groups in order to thrive, and due to their relatively large size, this will require an accordingly large aquarium.
