Though they were once relatively common in aquariums, they are now much rarer than they once were. Most aquarium specimens come from Brazil.

This profile may be a tad iffy-- stay with me. Dasyatis sabina is a North American stingray, that is, by many means, a true freshwater stingray. However, freshwater specimens only exist in certain areas, and keeping these fish in freshwater can prove incredibly difficult, due to the amount of waste they produce in lower salinities. They are, in fact, best regarded as a marine fish. Those that inhabit freshwater have developed in pure freshwater for a very long time without leaving, while the marine and brackish specimens rarely if ever even so much as enter it. These rays are very plentiful in the wild, and make a popular choice for touch tanks at public aquariums.

Much like the aforementioned Pimelodus maculatus, these fish are often overshadowed by the very popular Pimelodus pictus. Like their relatives, these fish must be kept in groups in order to thrive, and due to their relatively large size, this will require an accordingly large aquarium.
