Keep them divided for a LONG time. Don't give the male access unless the female is doing her belly dance for him. It took me almost a year to get two pikes that didn't want to straight up kill each other. Now I have a loosely bonded pair.
 
Here is the pair about two months ago. Sorry about the cloudy water, I was removing the substrate at the time.
