Xingu update

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yah I definitely don't include powerheads as turn over as that only adds more flow. I've always been a big believer it's important to invest more money into your filtration than fishes as they are the reason your fish is alive. I do around a 75% w/c on all my tank 3 times a week change socks every other day. I would love to see a picture of your set up im curious to see how to set up a k1 sump. I'm considering buying a 75g tank and using Japanese matts as baffles for k1 compartment anyone think this will work? Pretty much [_|___|_]. Super simple.

I created a reactor for the K1. I found it easier to manage this way. I'm not sure how to upload videos on here without having to load them onto YouTube. This is what the reactors chamber looks like. A jaboa pump pushes the K1 by supplying water from the sump. The water flows through pvc and then circulates the media in the reactor. The filtered water flows back into the sump. It's a prett simple, straight forward setup. I'll have to snap some photos of the entire reactor when I get a chance.

Ultima media is sand correct? My boy had great results running the K1 in the Hayward. I'd say his tank was over stocked with zero issues. He had about 10 12-14"+ bass and 2 13"+ rays, fed them ever day a good amount and they were all in a 210 gallon. He would backwash the unit with every water change.

I will let you know how my filtration setup works when the time comes. I am big into filtration myself and also run a very high turnover rate. It is key for a successful setup and this is where most people go wrong. I also don't consider powerheads turnover, only the amount of water that actually passes through the media. I saw some mention in this thread from someone else about powerheads. I alway say it's not so much about the size of the tank as it is about the size of your filtration and turnover. As long as the aerobic bacteria can convert the ammonia into nitrates fast enough. I never have any measurable traces of ammonia in my tanks when testing my water. Your water change schedule is important too. As much as we strive to culture as much anaerobic bacteria as possible to consume the byproduct nitrates, it's never enough to be noticeable IMO and it needs some help with its removal.

X2 on turnover I also feel it’s very important, back when I first started keeping bass I had a 265 gallon with 2 Fx5 and a sump with a mag drive pump 900gph and I thought this was a lot of filtration but my bass never looked as good as R1ridah’s, Hulons, Kendragon’s I learned from these guys and sort of evolved. My water change schedule I change about 500gallons every week I have tested my nitrates it hits 80ppm before water changes if I feed the big tank every day I need a drip system badly. Dloks Dloks sorry for the thread derail bro but you mentioned filtration and it sparked interest and good conversation! :)

Ahhh so ultima 2 media is pretty much K1. I'm assuming it is smaller and has more surface area? Have you tried modifiying the strainer so you won't lose any when back flushing? Kind of hard to do now once the unit is running. That's not something that you'd want to keep down for long. A old buddy of mine decided that he didn't want to run K1 anymore (something about the noise) so decided to take an 6-8oz cup full out twice a week until the K1 would be completely gone. Well he got 2 weeks in and he almost killed every bass in his tank and the rest went blind from the ammonia spike. This is when I realized that I need to run the stuff and it actually works.

I change about 80 percent weekly myself. 80pms is really high. Mine never really climbs above 40ppms. Maybe the anaerobic filter media that I run works a lot better than I thought. I ran a drip system in the past and I am a big fan. Sadly water isn't free where I live and the prices for water have skyrocketed :( we'll see how my next setup is situated. I may want to run one again one day.

Ehhh this is good derailment. For those who care, they can learn a lot.

I think I may take the multi port valve apart and see if I can rig something up I have tried stainless steel mesh but it doesn’t conform well enough to prevent the media from coming out. I feed the big boys every other day (they can eat a ton of pellets) and i can keep my nitrates at 40 ppm before water change, I have done some homework here to make sure my nitrates don’t get that high so test test and retest. I still check my nitrates every other week to ensure I’m not getting to much nitrate creep I clean the detritus out of the sump when my testing shows readings higher than 40 ppm in between water changes and do 2 500 gallon changes in a week seems to do the trick. Same here water is not free but it’s a small price to pay for the hobby I love so much. Changing out the media in the Hayward right now is not an option its already seaded it’s like K1 takes forever to sead so I have figure something out.

Have you ever plastic welded anything? That may be an easy-ish alternative. Plastic weld some sort of plastic mesh or strainer over the existing strainer. I wouldn't change out the media, it's a death wish. I would only add more as the old media breaks down. I didn't think that was possible but recently my media looked as if it has shrunk and I had to add more.

I sure have plastic welded I’m a auto technician so plastic welding is a must as well as welding in general. Lol to be honest I was just thinking of using small zip ties to stitch the hole in a x pattern should work like a charm. A project for a later date the last time I had the multi port valve off I still had media 80% full. I will post up what I did if it works so if anyone wants to make a poor mans ultima 2 filter the info is out there. Maybe your media didn’t shrink it just compacted more you should watch the videos on YouTube from wrighty on his midi system the static barrel after a cleaning he would put brick on the K1 and it would sink after a few days same experiment the K1 would compact so tightly it would hold the brick and not sink interesting video

Nice!

I will have to check the video out.
