So are you now selling the XP3? You should recommend to your friend that he should consult the owners manual. These filters don't just leak all over the place and his is a likely a result of operater error or maybe just plain stupidity.

I have two and love them. As far as draining, any filter can do that. The hose came off my return line the other day from the w/d and started pumping water all over the floor.

He called them. They said it was a problem with their filter. Dr. Fosters is sending him out another one.

True, but the wetdry would only pump an inch or so of the water into the tank before it stopped. The canister could possibly drain all the way until it hit the intage, which is usually 4" from the bottom of the tank.

I went with a FX5 once I saw my friends xp3.

I have to agree with you, unless you dont' have the extra $80. I saw my friends XP3 and thought that it looked pretty good. I didn't realise until I held the components how lacking it was compared to the FX5. I understand that we are comparing apples and oranges here, since it is a different class of filter. All I'm saying is that if I were looking for a filter I would recommend spending the extra $80 and getting the FX5.

If you are worried about your xp3 draining your tank take a drill and make a hole say 1 or 2 inches down on the intake. If the water gets that low it will suck air and not water.

Smart idea. I'm going to do this. Thx

I personally hate the Filstar series filters. They went overboard with the flow rate advertising (as many do). Xp4, 400 GPH? BS, try 180 GPH when its full. THATS HORRIBLE!!! Especially for the price. Small cross section surface area, cheesy snap together parts with clips I can see breaking off. No thanks.

The canister never even completly, 100% purges. There is about 1/2" of air outside of the baskets that will never leave.

They also have a built in bypass feature so yuo don't ruin the pump if the filter clogs up which it will do quicker than most other filters due to the very small cross section surface area.

The Fx5 is so much better. The manual says 607 GPH, I and others have tested their Fx5s, full of media at 600 GPH. For just over $200, you can't go wrong.

You can always order 20 or 30 ppi foam and cut them to fit the outside baskets so you can filter smaller particles utilizing a very large cross section surface area.

This is true, but like others have stated, drill a small hole just below the water line so it won't empty your tank. Now, you will still have a very wet mess on your hands. Performing the proper maintenance on filters will keep this from happening.

Many canister filter owners won't inspect, clean or replace o-rings which wear out over time. Usually after many years of service. Once the filter starts leaking, they say its a crappy filter when the owner is just a crappy filter maintenace technician. Had to make the last part sound very specfic.

My Fluval 304 starting to leak after being in service for over 10 years. I just cleaned and rotated the o-ring and it hasn't leaked since.
