I am not going to argue with Jgray anymore because bickering is not productive and not the purpose of this site.

Jgray is a Hagen spy sent to MFK to dig up sales:ROFL::grinno:

Sorry but at times it seems like this site if full of kindergartners, and much of it comes from long time members who should be setting a good example for new members. If you guys need to argue back and forth start a thread just for it or do it in PMs. It just seems it is the same group of people who keep arguing in multiple threads about the same topic.

12 Volt Man, I mean no disrespect to you by quoting you. You just made it easy to use you as an example since you said you were going to walk away yet you didn't.

I realize this post will probably get deleted as it adds nothing to this thread but neither does the bickering back and forth, it does not represent this site very well. I doubt this is what deepsouth wanted to sort through when this thread was started

sorry for trying to have a little fun. this site can be educational and fun at the same time.

my comments were intended as tounge in cheek. they are not meant to be taken seriously - hence the smilies at the end. see them?

people need to lighten up a bit.

this is a hobby. it is supposed to be fun.

this board should be fun too.

we should be able to have a good discussion and have fun at the same time.

which is what this thread has been doing. its been a great thread. IMO.

Only in a couple of posts:) what about the rest.

Back on topic, the Rena XPs and FX5 are in separate categories and should be compared to their appropriate counter parts.

This is true, though this thread started as a bash rena thread, which is fine. People will have there opinions. However it is not fair to the people researching the filters, to have false information posted, which has been done regarding the XPs.

What?!? This bash-thread helped me make my decision in purchasing an XP.

I agree with you. I should have started a thread that titled, "I'm I think my FX5 is a better filter than my XP3 that I just purchased". Its just that I heard tons of people saying great things about this filter, but IMO it turned out to be just a so so filter. For $109 you can't go wrong, but I wouldn't spend retail on this filter. The same could be said for the FX5 though. It is a great deal for $200, but I would think twice if it were $299+.

But what would your choice have been if no satisfied XP owners had stepped up and posted?

Honestly, the same.

In terms of criticisms regarding leaking: Filters/o-rings are like hot coffee in a mug, sometimes things escape (and that is just the inherent nature of these devices and the components they use).

In regards to tubing being too transparent and encourages growth: If I want it covered, I'll cover it...if it needs to be cleaned, I'll use a flexible pipe brush to clean it.

I think many people forget to notice the little things. We all know about cleaning the impeller, but if you are going through all the attention and QC on the big things and forgetting the little ones...that's where things go wrong.

Check the seals, keep the o-rings moist (vasoline is good), clean off the impeller, that is what makes equipment last....all that attention to detail once a month.

Just because an FX5 is expensive, doesn't mean the parts are quality and exempt from servicing. Just because an XP3 is affordable, doesn't mean it is expendable.

I can go on and on...like vacuum cleaners. A Dyson is an overpriced bagless vacuum cleaner with the same mechanical flaw (the mechanism is in direct exposure to free-flowing media) as a cheap bagless. Same with filters, if you don't take care of your stuff...no matter if it is a Fluval, Eheim, or Rena...it will turn to absolute garbage.
