Xp3 or xp4

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Here are XP1 and XP4 impellers again too. It's the newer 3 blade XP4 impeller. Notice the green tint to the XP1.

I'm definitely leaning towards the fx5. It's hard though when I could get 2 xp3s for the price of the fx5.

As far as the air leak is concerned in my original xp3. After purging every bit of air out of the filter, the second I plug the filter in the water level drops down about 1/2" below the lid. I have replaced every gasket. No change. I replaced the entire quick disconnect valve. No change. I replaced the intake and spray bar with the upgrade kit. No change. I also replaced the tubes. No change. Last night I reseated the canister gasket and actually got it to seal without air coming back into the system. Unfortunately it wouldn't pump any water. After about 5 mins it sucked some air in and started pumping water again. I am open to suggestions but am kind of hesitant to spend any more money on this filter. Ive spent about 100$ and for another 20$ I could've bought a brand new xp3.

I did get 6 or 7 years out of the xp3 so i can't be too bitter but... That fx5 does have that new car smell.

Older XP4 models may have had impellers closer in shape or size to the XP3, not sure when they changed over exactly. The XP4 impellers have an olive green plastic used in the impeller, the older style was grey. When I ordered my replacement impeller for the XP4, I received a new style impeller in a box form Rena with an old style picture on the label.

Here are some reference photos. The new style XP4 impeller is now three blades, a bit thicker blade and taller. The old style is six blades.

Since you know the tank functions well on this filter, I would go with a XP4 and an AC110.

The AC110 filters were on sale for $63.99 from petmountain.com and if you throw in another $12 worth of stuff to get your total over $75, then shipping is free too. http://www.petmountain.com/product/...-512916/aquaclear-aquaclear-power-filter.html

If you want to get a new XP4, petmountain also had those on sale for $169.99 http://www.petmountain.com/product/...2-107524/rena-filstar-xp-canister-filter.html

Otherwise I would look at used filters on Criagslist and in the MFK classifieds.

Mine is an older xp4- give or take 3-6years. Im pretty sure its all white execpt for magnet and i know it has 3 blades w/ 2 black seals on each end of impeller rod. Is it the old model?

I'm with everyone else FX5, they really are amazing.
Plus FX5>(2)xp3's IMO
But if not, xp3 and AC110

This may sound odd, but there are a few things I would try. First, put your XP3 in a bin or bucket, something to catch water. I usually throw an old towel in there to soak it up right away too.

Then carefully take out the rubber gasket that is on the inside lip of the lid. Take a toothbrush and clean out the groove, wipe some vaseline into the groove and replace the gasket - make sure the gasket is also clean, and don't twist it when putting it in.

Fill the canister all the way up then put the lid on but only lock one side of latches, open the line up again with your hand pushing the lid tight and let it burp fir a minute. Plug in the XP3 and give it a minute to start the water flow. Usually by now mine is showing the water level dropped about 1 1/2 inches from the lip in the canister and I can hear air still going through the impeller a bit. Here's where the odd stuff comes in - I have one side still unlatched, and my hand holding the lid down. I now give the canister a little shake, it with burp more air out again after this. After 10 seconds again, I carefully wiggle the lid loose on the side that's unlatched, it sometimes just gurgles as the air escapes and then water runs over the edge, other times it's purged the air so fast the water sprays out. If you open it too much you will start to let air back into the canister too, so be careful. When I'm doing this I will also shake it a little so it dislodges any air bubbles too. When it's done just push the lid on and finally latch it down completely.

The only time this hasn't worked, has been when my XP1 had an issue with the seal around the lid shrinking up. It first would suck air in, but not leak (Vaseline helped this). Then it got to the point where it would trickle water out of one corner unless you pushed on it with your hand. Replacing the seal fixed it (ebay or amazon). If yours keeps sucking air in this may be worth a try, the seal is about $10.

Considering how much you have invested in the filter already, it might be worth at least trying to replace the seal first if it keeps having problems. The only other idea I have would be to look on ebay for a motor/top sold at parts. Sometimes you find them pretty cheap, there was a XP1 body with a XP3 top awhile back for $25.

try blowing water thru the filter using a powerhead(thru intake tube)

From what I have heard, the older impeller is the 5 blade, and the newer one a three blade. There is a possibility this could be a factory error, but I haven't called Rena to ask. The two Rena canisters I bought used from the original owner both had 5 blade impellers, they seemed to run rough to me, so I bought replacement impellers and was sent 3 blade impellers. Although I would generally trust the person I bought it from, there is a possibility they replaced it with a XP3 blade I guess. The biggest question I still have then, is why would the cardboard slip in the impeller case show a 5 blade impeller and label it as a XP4 impeller? The impeller received in that box was a three blade impeller as well. I already considered it maybe was a 'stock' photo for impellers, but the other impellers boxes look like they show the actual impeller.
