Xy. kyoga flameback?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
imo if it was a male, it would of started coloring around an inch, inch and a half, like most vics, but i could be wrong, you could just have a sneaky male lol :D

Could be a male, give it some time. It could also be just a very dominant female as well. Time will tell.

What was explained to me was that if you only have one male, without competition it may not color well. The dominant male needs another male to show the best colors, or it won't need to compete for the females, since that is the only option for them, but with 2 or more males, the dominant will show better colors to attract the females away from the other males.

This is the problem I'm having with my male...he has no competion. He has just a little red in his face, but not the rest of his body. I have at least 2 little males (about an inch) that are starting to show a little red, and I'm hoping they will spur him into show colors. I got my advice from Greg Steeves, if this helps.

I guess it could be a male then? I did have another male in there but lost him a couple weeks back...The red on this one didn't show up until after the other males death.Maybe that is why my other male had such good color? I thought I had 1 male and 5 females...maybe not. I guess the only way to know for sure is if I get another male or my females are all of a sudden holding. I just got 4 more of these from Dave as well...Hopefully I get at least 1 male from them.

Oh, so does your male look like the pics I posted?

Sort of, but yours has a little more red in the head than mine. He gets a touch more color every day...I also think I have an extremely aggressive female, and my personal theory is that I got the dominant female and not the dominant male so she's actually more aggressive than he is.

to tell you the truth im not a 100% sold on this whole "needing competition" thing for color, at first i only had one male and he was colored up within hours of me having having him.

How big is the one you think mite be a male??? what your tank params?? and also are they in a species only or do you have then with other fish?? If so what kinds of fish? Cause if you have them in with other fish you can pretty much throw "needing competition" out the window, lol, the king of the tank is king of all in the tank, im pretty much saying if there not in a species only there should already be sufficient competition present

are you shure its a kyoga flame back some time these two get confused
this is not a flame back

I am not 100% sure...They were sold as X. kyoga flamebacks... My fish really doesn't look like the one pictured though. She only has the pinisk color on her head and the body is a plain goldish/silver blah color. I don't see any other color coming out at all. The fish are about 2". They were all bought from the same source and the fish in my avatar was my male. My male died a couple weeks ago.The rest were suppose to be female.

Ok, I am really begining to think this is a male..He is shaking himself at the others like a male would. So, where is the rest of his color? Do they color up all at once or could he be in the process of coloring? WTH?

its a process, watch for coloring in the near future though cause i have females that do the shaking thing to (being territorial), so its not a definite sign, but that, eggspots, and slight coloring, starting to sound better :)
