I found out a little more info on the Kyogas. Kyogas tend to display the horizontal bar when they are in a less dominant state. When they are dominant and all fired up the bar is pretty much non existant and stays that way unless it isn't a dominant male.

From GAS's post on the ACA forum:

I would agree with Kevin and not so much on male coloration but the pattern on the female. When a male is in full color it is sometimes tougher to differentiate the species from others. Usually when in a non dominant pattern, the male Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga flameback will show the same broken horizontal mid lateral bar as your female does. When excited, the vertical bars really show through and other times they are barely visible. When I first seen that male I immediately thought it to be perhaps Astatotilapia sp. "tomato" but I now feel that was just wishful thinking on my part. I'm sorry but I would rather tell you I wasn't sure than to give you an id that might be incorrect. Kevin is very knowledgeable and I often go to him with questions. You can put a lot of faith in his opinion.

The way I read it he is stating that the vertical bars will really show up when excited and other times will be barely visible.
