Scrap the blue pads altogether and stick to ceramic rings in ALL three baskets. The stock foam in the outer core is already 5 times the mechanical filtration of other cannisters. What happens is that if you restrict the water flow in the baskets the computer controled motor will cut back power to match.

I have flow meters on all of our canisters and the FX5's set up the way I told you are running a constant 750 gph. don't forget this output is through a large double outlet fed by 1" hose rather than the normal 1/2" and 3/4" stuff. The pressure SEEMS less than it really is. Your confusing speed with volume...

Hook an FX5 up to a smaller after market output nozzle and it'l blow the end of the tank off. (don't do this by the way..it's horrible for the fish and rough on the filter...that was just an example.)
hehe just picturing etting up filter and turning on and end of tank exsploding....:WHOA: ....thanks for all your help guys much much apprichiated...well going to use the bio mass at moment and one blue in base..until i get some more cash then slowly turn in over to ceramics....might put half of the ceramics out of exsisting filter now in one tray....
The AC110 moves a third of that at best however its in a waterfall configuration so you can SEE more of the movement

o yea i dont use the blue pad. i use the white one..i think it allows more flow. so far no probs on my end. 1st basket i have the prefilter ceramic rings, 2nd basket the normal ceramic rings, 3rd basket has more rings with 1 white pad on it. next time i clean it im gonna try no pad.

and how much media r u guys filling ur FX5's with? r u filling the baskets up max? halfway?

I guess my problem is i liked the Aquaclears they moved alot of water. I just thought it would move more water in my tank but after i put in some ceramics it slowed right down but i like the extra bio mass in it my next one i might not put any thing in but the original foam. I'll see if it make a diffrence. But so far not really impressed. Yes i'm in to maosters too like peacocks and rays that might make the differnce. I might of asumed wrong when i saw the sixe of them they would move more water and i clean mine once a week.

I feel the exact same about mine. The flow is just not very strong, I thought something was wrong with it, but that's just the way the filter is. I added an xp3 on the other end of the tank to supplement, and the two are a great combo.

I have all of mine filled to about 3/4s of a inch from the top with ceramic rings. I don't bother with any of the other media. I run other filters on my tanks to supliment the cans...(HOB's and Hydro's) this seems to be a great combination and cuts WAY down on the maintance.

Yeah I think the pads are clogging in mine and messing up the flowrate once I use up all my pads gonna go with none and just stick with ceramic rings, bio max and Zero Carb.

Even when it feels like the FX5 is not doing much...trust me...it's STILL moveing a LOT of water. Pick up a flow meter for around 10.00 and see for yourself.

set the filter up friday, with the media you see in the picture and exsisting ceramic things....filled it with 8 litres of squeezed crap from exsisting filters...wen i turned it on it was like a fog machine filled tank with crap...couldnt see a thing in tank at all, left other filters off at this time and within 20mins it was crysta clear again, seems to be working fine...:nilly:

couldn't have said it better myself. no pads, all ceramic or bio media and remember huge hosing gives the impression it's not flying out but it really is. the volume turnover is immense.
