Some people have success with mice-base diet, others don't. The ones that don't have suggest with a rodent-based diet are the ones that OVERFEED their monitors and don't give them enough space. If the person is the kind that like to see your reptile eat everyday, then an insect-based diet is best for them. Most monitor owners think that their reptiles should eat every day, so that kind of diet does not work for them.

There is no real difference between the different kind of rodents other than the meat to bone ratio in some of them once you get into the larger ones. The only real differences that matter to the snakes sometimes is the size, smell and colour. Some snakes prefer certain colour, some prefer a certain smell. Breeders use a mouse-based or rat-based diet since they are readily avaliable at any store. However sometimes people end up with a wild-captive or captive-hatched and the owners end up having to breed their wild-based diet to keep them alive.

Again it all has to do with proper temps and humidity. Mine eat mice everyday. The proper temps and humidity are kept for it to function normally. If you dont provide the proper temps and humidity your monitor will be fat and lethargic. You give it the proper temps and humidity and it will be active fit and eating everyday.

is my monitor big enough to eat 2 pinkies every 2 days.

I would try fuzzies, he looks big enough for them and the older the baby mouse is the more nutritious they tend to be, ie an adult mouse is probably a better meal than a rat pup.

The water monitor that I mentioned before in some post was somewhere in the 16-20" range and he ate 2 fuzzies a day...that mangrove looks close to that. Looks a little big for crix actually, if you do try to feed insects I'd look for locusts or roaches. Zoo-med has those cans, they have locusts now...I have no idea if those can-o-bugs things are any good though, I've never used 'em. I knew a guy with a uromastyx that loved the can-o-crix though, fwiw.

I would give it a water bowl long enough for it to strech out in.

Yep...taking another look at the pic he's ~12" SVL, what do you figure, 30" total length? I was thinking he was smaller but ya, bigger bowl & bigger enclosure asap.
