Sounds like a water or nile moniter. My first guess was tegu, but I have yet to hear of a six foot tegu ;)

Yeah, I was thinking of a tegu aswell.
Plenty of them in FLA.
 
The size & location say nile or water...tegus aren't generally found near water, and don't get nearly that big. Tops for them is around 5' for T. marianae (Argentine B&W) and they really don't look like monitors.

Agreed.

Tegu was just what came to my mind before i read how big it was :)
 
damn, first florida become infested with iguana and now monitors. sounds like i need to move there!!!

i live in florida and in some parts water monitors are a big problem. they can easily crawl up into peoples' back yards and eat their pets. my friends dog got eaten by one and i've seen them myself. if you go outside near them though, chances are that they will run away. But If you back them into a corner you have a good chance of getting whipped or bit, and their tails can break bones.
