Today, I ordered a Silver Arowana from our local LFS. They had one when I first got there...maybe 3 inches (still had the egg sac attached). The one I will be getting is from the same batch. I pick it up on Wednesday. I admit, I am pretty excited to finally be getting one :headbang2

He will go into a 29 by himself when he first comes home. He will then be moved to a 55 next week-end. I will start to look for a few smaller tank mates for him. Eventually he will take over the 150. My Cichlids will go into a new 125 and a 49 cube.

By Summer's end, I plan to have my DIY tank completed as part of my basement remodeling project, which is where he will end up as his "forever home". I hate moving him around this much, but I think he'll be fine with this plan.

Without researching more, I need to bother you all with a simple question. Knowing my tank plans listed above, should I order a second Aro? Or do they do better as individuals?

Thanks :)

In a 150 you would be better off with just one Aro; my dad has one in a 125 and it will likely outgrow the tank soon and he is about a year old...he is alright in there but it is looking more and more cramped for sure -- really most people recommend at least a 240 for a Silve Arowana for life, but he will be alright in there for a while. I wouldn't suggest two in there, though. They are very active swimmers and therefore need more room than you think.

Anyways, exciting stuff! Aros are amazing fish!

That being said, of course, I have no clue how big your DYI tank will be, so it is hard to judge. They can be kept together with no problems a lot of times, it just requires a huge tank. Anything under 300 gallons I wouldn't sugges two, but that's just my two cents. Best of luck! :)

They are ok either way. Not two in a 125 though. How big will the diy tank be? This will determine whether you'll be able to get more than one.

Thanks man! Yeah, I realize I have under a year to get him into a permanent home. I think the 150 will be good for his "teen-age months".

My DIY is only conceptual at this point. With 10 degree temps outside, the remodeling project is on hold for awhile. Once it warms back up, I'll get busy again. My plans are to build out from two walls. The tank will be 18' X 7' L shaped. It will only be 2' tall by 2' deep. I plan on building it out so that there is a 30" walkway behind the tank. It will be enclosed in the "wall" with an entrance door at one end.

On the opposite wall, I will have the 150, 55 and 29 tanks since they all have identical trim, lights and stands (obviously not the same size).

But, I am anxious to get the Aro now...so the plan is to go with as I stated originally :)

Thank you!

congradulations ... wow looking forward to seeing your new silver...

Thanks everyone. I seriously appreciate the advice. I suddenly feel like a noob all over again. All over a 3" fish lol.

Ghost...thank you. I will plan on 3' wide. I admit, I was trying to be thrifty and make it 2' X 2' so I could get two pieces out of one sheet of plywood. But, going 3' will only take 3 extra sheets. I really want to keep it 2' in height just to keep the over-all elevation down. But, I still have some planning to do. Now though, I have the inspiration to get busy lol.

I am sure I will have more questions as time goes on, but for now, I wanted to be sure I should stay with one.

Thanks all!

Congrats on your pick up. They are graceful creatures.

I am excited to see your diy set up. I would also vote for the 3' w.

If you plan on getting another aro, make sure you add tons of current so they will have to swim more then get territorial.
