Thank you! I just picked up several floating plants today at a swap meet, so perfect timing lol! I am hoping he has absorbed the yolk sac by Wednesday. If not, I will be extra careful. For the next 3 months, he will be in tanks with glass lids. Will they be sufficient weight to remain shut? Or should I consider weighting them even at this early stage?

Just be sure that your top is sealed up well. Aros can jump through the smallest of places. A regular glass top should be sufficient for your baby aro, but as he grows you may want to weigh down the lids. My 20" silver has actually broken a pice of plate glass(non-tempered) jumping at a fly.

Best of luck,
Chris

Not wanting to rain on your parade, if you want ONE Aro, is there any way you can get a larger baby Aro?

Aro's with yolk sacks still attached are arguably among the most fragile aquarium fish, and we would like you to succeed from the onset.

Many people may not agree with me, but, at that size ( if, of course, the price is acceptable ) I would get a group of them and not keep it solo.

If you get 4 or 5, chances are that one will be stronger and will show it quickly. It will eat more, scare the others away, and grow faster in its way to dominance.

That would then be your Aro.

If you want to keep more avoid pairs. Allways more than three.

Also, when bought at that size, odds are that they may be from the same brood, and agressivity is lower. ( I have kept 4 2 footers since babies without any agression whatsoever, and I believe that they were sisters ).

Enjoy and wellcome to Arodom!

Thanks Miguel. "Mod status" aside, I have always respected your opinions and advice you give. You just now literally made me go "Hmmm" out loud :nilly: lol. Everything you just stated makes perfect sense.

Money isn't an issue (not that I have lots, just that the price is really good!). What if I end up being the one time where everyone gets along and I end up with 3 or 4 adult Aros? Not asking literally, just thinking. The guy I ordered will be here tomorrow night, but I can't pick him up until Wednesday. The next shipment available is the following Tuesday. My LFS caters primarily to Cichlid and Pleco keepers (and is one of the best IMO). The Aro is more a favor to me than anything.

I will ask my MFK friends for some solid advice. I will go with what you decide. Shall I go ahead and pick him up Wednesday and see how it goes? I will pay my LFS either way since they ordered him for me. If I do lose him, I can go with the multiple group next round. If I do get him, should I go ahead and order 2 or 3 more for the following week? Should I ask the LFS to hang on to him until the others arrive? (though the LFS normally does not keep them in stock, he will most likely be isolated at the store)

For basic FW and brackish water aquariums, I have every available tool, additive and medication on hand (that I am aware of). I am pretty dedicated with water change frequencies, etc. I would not be ashamed to post my water parameters in any tank at any time. I am willing to go the extra steps to make sure this little guy is content, healthy and happy. But, I would not be happy with myself if I lost such an amazing fish due to ignorance.

I will rely on your experiences.

Thanks friends!

I will get back to it. My CEO is calling for dinner.

Can this first baby be kept in the store untill the others arive?

That is what I would do, assuming you go the route I suggested.

Has several advantages: (i) it does not go solo into the tank and get proprietary with it pending the others arrival;
(ii) you can check it with the other aros in the LFS's tank, assuming that the LFS will order more than you ordered. If not, this (ii) is N/A.

At the size you are getting them you can have them in your tank for months and you can see how things develop.

They learn how to eat with one another. Get them on pellets as fast as you can, but do not attempt before you have them eating bloodworms or krill or any other stuff that you might try.

You end up with 3 or 4 grown up Aros, you'll have passed by the stage where you will have 3 or 4 juvenile aros and had time to decide where to take your fishkeeping. Who knows, you might like them to tears ( as many in here do ) and convert the hobby to Aro's and all it entails.

One is enough for you, just offer the remaining to people you consider are apt at caring for them.

Main thing is you have a lot of time to decide.

All...I truly appreciate your input and efforts here. Amazing bunch if you ask me. All this input and planning for a 3 inch fish :)

OK, the good news. I have both frozen bloodworms and pellets. lol

Now, I don't mean to come off like I am going to continue to ask questions until you say yes. I am absolutely taking in your advice and plan on following it to the letter. But, I am also trying to take into consideration the LFS that ordered the fish for me. The guy that owns and runs the store is amazing (Mike D. among others here know him). If I asked him to hold the fish, he would. But, I would feel guilty knowing he has an entire tank set aside just for me. I don't like messing around with people's livelihood...which in essence is what I'd be doing. He doesn't normally carry anything but high grade Cichlids and Plecos, so there isn't a tank of Aros.

So, keeping in mind the advice given, how is this for a plan? Pick him up on Wednesday as planned and put him in the 29. Instead of moving him to the 55 this week-end, he stays in the 29 for a week. I order 3 more to be picked up a week from Wednesday. That night, they all go into the 55 together. I realize Aro #1 will still have a head start since he will be used to the dogs walking by and the foods I feed them.

Do you think this work out long term?

Filtration-wise, I have two Whisper 30-60 HOBs and a Magnum 350 canister (yeah, these are all my low-tech filters). I am going to have the 350 cleaned up, but not operating until they grow some. I have two 200 watt heaters.

I am going to browse the forum to see what most use for decorations. I have a bit of everything from artificial to driftwood to holey rock. Of course as pi-eyed suggested, I will have a variety of floating plants.

Again, thank you!

Frozen blood worms sink, OK to feed once the aro is eating good. Freeze dried blood worms float, gives the aro more time to eat them and are easier to remove if uneaten.

Your plans sound fine except what happens if it don't work? Do you have the means to keep 4 baby aros separately? Also the surface current created by your HOBs may overwhelm the baby arowana
