love my kids, 4 adopted. question: what is the purpose of life?

I take you seriously except when you make statements that no one takes you seriously, define your self my friend. let no man do it for you.

I am not a saint, nor is my wife. Just serving the answer to the question. and getting lots of joy, happiness and a sense of accomplishment by doing so. :)

Well good for you pops :)

Let's demonize those who keep popping babies!! :D

Hello; Fascinating. I am going to respond as though your post is in reference to my previous post. When I have talked with people about being childless one of the questions sometimes asked of me is. Why don't you like children? I even understand why their thoughts go in that direction.
The answer is that I do like children. I was a public school teacher for over thirty three years. I had been teaching for about five years when I decided to be childless. I felt then and still feel that the best way to help all children is to do whatever I can to give them a decent place to live. By then I was doing graduate studies in ecology. My conclusion back then was that overpopulation was going to be the basis for most of the big problems to come along. There was a "zero population growth" movement for a time which did not persist. I felt that the sacrifice of being childless by some was going to be necessary. I like children very much.
As I have stated, the children and grandchildren I do not have are not competing for resources other children need.
I do not demonize those that have children. I am concerned for the well being of children. I did what I felt was best.

different road, same goal. :)

While I said that in a tongue and check manor, I still feel there is some valid motivation behind it. I just feel like we've known about over population for at LEAST 50 years now, probably longer and while we have made some progress, we still continue to understand it's not enough. You throw an idea out like whoaa we need to slow down, and it's an utter train wreck, why?

Hello; basically I do not have an answer for why. As you say, by now most everyone should know something about the world human population. It is not because of a lack of information.
Maybe it is like talking and texting while driving. By now everyone should know what a bad idea this is. I can sit on my front porch overlooking a busy highway. Every few cars the driver has a phone at their ear. You all know what I am talking about.
I recently had a conversation with a close friend whose daughter just got married. He and I have had the population talk many times. He and his wife had only two children. I mentioned that perhaps his daughter and her husband might adopt instead of bringing another child into the world. I could tell that went over like a lead balloon.
A secondary side effect of my being childless now is not having to be so worried. By now, at my age, I could have great grandchildren. They do not exist and will not have to face a future that seems so likely to be a poor place to live.
I have a close friend who has two daughters. He was not too concerned over the decades about my views on the subject. Unfortunately he is an intelligent person. When his grandchildren came along there was a period when he did not really want me around talking. I speculate that in his readings he was seeing many of the things I had been going on about for years. I feel the import of what it could mean for his young grandchildren was a bit much and for a time i was an unwelcome reminder. We are ok now. The die is cast so to speak.
